It cannot be repeated enough just how shitty of an experience Northwestern's stadium is, whether full or not. Worst Power 5 stadium experience I've ever had by far. Restrooms, concessions, ticketing, sight lines, etc. Just abysmal

They wanna do a nice renovation, but of course there's the usual pushback of people who buy houses or live near a stadium and then complain when large scale events are held at the stadium that exists to house tens of thousands of people

quote:

If you ever drive around Evanston, it is impossible to miss the "eNoUgh" signs planted in yards surrounding the stadium. Residents of Evanston’s seventh ward, where the stadium is located, and surrounding neighborhoods in Wilmette have attempted to halt the construction of the stadium. Residents are not concerned with the football and lacrosse games, but with concert-goers flooding the neighborhood. Neighbors complain of traffic congestion and are worried the noise and light from concerts will keep them up at night.

Neighbors were also concerned that Northwestern was not paying its fair share back to the community. Because the stadium was designated for “educational purposes," Northwestern does not pay tax on the revenue it collects from the stadium. With the university proposing to hold concerts at the new venue, residents wanted assurances that the community would see the benefits of the increased revenue. On Thursday, Schill laid out NU’s financial plan to help Evanston. He said NU would guarantee $2 million to the city, and surcharges on concert tickets will provide $50,000 to local Evanston schools. Schill added that NU will host a $250,000 event each year “that will benefit our entire community as directed by city leadership.”

Did you not see the big stadium across the street that's been there for a hundred years when you bought your place?

For Ohio state - why do you have to pour alcohol into a cup for tailgating? I went to a game against Indiana a few years ago and everyone was drinking out of a red solo cup and were adamant about not being seen with a beer can, etc. I thought it was the dumbest thing.

The game I went to was back when Hineygate still existed and that was a blast, and they most definitely were not concerned about red cups, as there was a pile of beer cans in the middle of the place up to my knees

ETA: After the game an OSU fan walked up, congratulated me on the win, handed me a beer, and said he was repaying the gesture from his trip to Madison

Assuming we don't continue to play like shite, that Halloween weekend night game against OSU should be about as good as as the atmosphere gets in Madtown.

I'll be there

Any suggestions for before the game?

Blame former OSU President Karen Holbrook.

Columbus Police/Franklin County Sheriffs will ticket you if you have an open container in its original bottle/can.

There's plausible deniability if it's in a red cup (any color, but Red is what you'll typically see) so they will not investigate further and leave everyone alone with a cup (barring other aggravating factors).

It's actually been a number of years since I've been back for a game, as I usually opted for road games and Rose Bowl trips to watch us lose a close one there (3 EFFING TIMES). But the pregame is largely bars and house parties around the stadium...our go to was the Big Ten Pub or one of the other bars around there, and then down to State St after. I believe that the new Union South has a fun pregame situation with the band and everything (and of course beer).

Some of my Badger brethren will likely have more current recommendations for you.

And I'll likely offend some of those folks by saying that I prefer the large tailgate field to bars for my pregaming...like what you get at Michigan, MSU, or PSU.

I was hoping a new QB for OSU would give us a good shot but currently we look like arse. Hopefully they get the new schemes figured out but the defense is a bunch of JAGs other than Wohler.

If it's a good game the Camp will be rocking for OSU at night.

Here is my take on the same:
over 40 years of Badger home season tickets. I have been to all the B1G stadiums besides Maryland/ Rutgers/ Nebraska. Plus SEC venues LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, Florida, Tennessee.

I have been to big games at an SEC venue on back to back weekends coming back to Camp Randall so I was able to compare places over the years pretty well.

Observations:

Loudest Stadiums
Ohio St, Penn St, LSU, Florida

Wildest tailgating scenes
LSU, Wisconsin, PSU ----Unique Ole Miss

For the B1G BIG games only I would rank
1. PSU - for a white out and smaller college town atmosphere and great tailgating scene
2. Ohio State- intimidating stadium, passionate fans, great traditions
3. Wisconsin- Urban Meyer himself called Camp Randall a top 5 nationally. There is a wild edge to the ADHD atmosphere overall. Unique bar/ tailgating/ house party scene.
4. Iowa- Underrated. Fans right on top of you and loud. Party scene similar to Madison.
------------------------------------------------------
5. Michigan- been there a few times. It can be loud. Its just a bit more wine/cheese/ arrogant vibe than the frat party debauchery vibe of the places ranked above it.
6. Nebraska- passionate fans. But they were definitely impressed with the Camp Randall atmosphere in 2011, 2014, 2016. Again...I just think the top 4 have a different edge/vibe/rowdy thing going on.

3. Wisconsin

Would love it if that is accurate. I guess we'll see in a month.

I think a big thing for me is what the students bring to the experience and intimidation factor. Schools like PSU, Iowa, Michigan...their student sections are JAMMED by kickoff, and they're into it from the jump through the final whistle...the actual game, not moreso the dumb shite during timeouts.

The Bleacher Creatures used to be great. I'd love to see that again.

Really? I wasn’t expecting that. I guess I assumed it would be Maryland or maybe Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Nebraska?

In the Big Ten it's Michigan State and Indiana at the top. Bottom is Michigan and Northwestern and Purdue.

Sounds about right! I've always believed that the attractiveness of coeds is directly related to the academic criteria needed to get into that school. ASU is a great example of this. Not sure about currently but it used to be if you can fog a mirror you can get admitted to Indiana and MSU.

I was there on Saturday vs Penn St, and it's just below Michigan 2006 as far as atmosphere for me. (I wasn't at 2009 USC or 2016 Michigan, but was there last year vs UM)

Not sure what inspired everyone, but from the very first snap, there wasn't a single defensive play the crowd took off. And they were always quiet when we had the ball.

It wasn't deafening at points like 2006 Michigan, but the crowd was awesome and definitely played a role in the game.

ETA: Excited for my first trip to Madison this week

All the SoCal girls go down south to the Zona schools once USC decided it wanted to be Stanford 20 years ago.

Now it's even more apparent...look at the stands of USC football games. Student body reflects a school impossible to get into for the old SoCal party girl crowd...sorry Lori Loughlin.

Madison is a great time and enjoyed Camp Randall.

Went to Iowa City in September and great set up there and not a bad seat in the house.

Not sure how familiar you are with Camp Randall, but it's pretty much in the middle of a neighborhood. You won't see sprawling parking lots, but plenty of smaller ones w/ "traditional" tailgates. Aside from that, it's a giant party of beer gardens and house parties around the stadium. Since it's a night game, you should check out the Farmers Market around the Capitol in the AM and pop in somewhere for a bloody / food. From there, bar crawl down State Street then make your way to Regent in the afternoon to post up at a beer garden (or two).

Just as a general warning / FYI, but Madison gets very, very crowded for home game weekends in the fall. It has been particularly crowded the last couple years and will be even worse with Ohio State and Halloween weekend. There will be lines everywhere on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. On Friday, I'd recommend getting an early bite and finding a bar to post up at before heading back to your hotel for the night. Capitol Square bars will be a generous mix of recent graduates, young professionals and older folks, while it'll get progressively younger as you move down State Street towards Chasers, Double U, KK, Brats, etc.

ETA: For food, I'd even consider swinging over to Willy (Williamson) St before heading back into the immediate downtown area. Really not far, so here are some ideas: Weary Traveler, Buraka, A Pig In A Fur Coat, Mickey's Tavern, Grampa's, Ha Long Bay, Lao Laan-Xang, etc.

Very good list. I would also suggest walking over to the Terrace at the Memorial Union for a beer (Spotted Cow is a good choice) and brat and checking out the scenery. The pics below were taken about a month ago on a Thursday afternoon but it should be packed on gameday. It's a great atmosphere on Lake Mendota.

Love the terrace on a sunny fall day before a game. Great way to ease into the party.
