Yeah, an import cap would be good, and I want to see our shrimpers thrive, but I don't think it's as low as they are claiming.
It is in fact as low as the shrimpers are claiming. The problem is the customer is not seeing the result of it. The docks are getting shrimp cheap, distributors are selling them cheap, restaurants are buying them cheap but the end user (customer) is not seeing the result in the stores or restaurants. The shrimpers are getting screwed on the front end and the customers are getting screwed on the back end, meanwhile the guys in the middle are benefitting. It is really sad what is happening due to the imports flooding the market.

Catfish industry is the same way. Restaurants and Sysco/US foods, etc never drop prices once they reach a new high even if the price on raw product drops eventually, so you never get the benefit of increased sales to offload inventory when prices drop

Our local crawfish farmers were caught in a squeeze like this a few years ago. Local wholesalers/processors were setting the price and hammering the farmers.
So the (larger) farmers started their own processing and distribution network.
I now have four processing plants with their own trucks distributing all over the south, within two miles of me.
Perhaps the shrimpers should try that.

It's awful here in Alabama too. I was in Bayou La Batre the other day and it was crazy how many shrimp boats were docked up.
