Tailgating has always been bigger at lsu, but the growth in the last 20 years or so has absolutely changed the in stadium energy

Early 90s we went to every game home and away for 5 years. Tailgating at lsu was always bigger than everywhere else, but the time on campus now is sooo much greater

We would tailgate every home game at the airplane, and we would get to campus at 1pm for a 7pm kickoff. Besides a select few, campus wouldn’t fill in until around 3pm

Now, it’s 10am and campus is pretty packed and tailgates going full speed. Overall people are just dead going into the game and the tailgate is now the main event

There is a slight bit of truth to this. I think it’s a much smaller part of a bigger problem though

You couldn't watch every game on a flat screen HD TV in the early nineties.

I wasn't even around then but it wasn't that far off when my parent's started taking me in the early 2000s.

Over-priced beer, long lines for bathrooms that are over flowing, and shitty concession stand food choices and don't even get me started on over priced tickets. Have you seen what people are selling Arkansas game tickets for right now?

I'll sit at a tailgate with food that I cooked to my liking and a case of reasonably priced beer with the game on my flat screen.

I have tailgate lid in the same spot since the late 80s. The traffic control and parking pass lots essentially forced fans to start tailgating in the morning. You have to get all of your ice chests, tents, tables and cooking apparatus set up by 100. To do so, you better be on site no later than 10. Big game traffic becomes a cluster by noon or so. Note that my group doesn’t show up until after 100/200, but the cooking crew is all on-site by 10.

This is true, but some of this can be traced back to university policies around access/parking IMO. It’s much harder now to tailgate without going “all-in” on it. It’s like your options are either A) don’t tailgate or B) tailgate from the arse crack of dawn onwards.

The 90's were terrible other than the blip that was Dinardo's success and the stadium had less capacity. Demand has increased with sucess and capacity has increased 20k since the 90's. I remember in the 90's there were so few people on campus MSU fans would drive around campus in vans with the doors open rining cow bells.

Other than a few games you can still show up at 12pm and get a tailgate spot, not prime but you can still get one.

Wrong it’s called ticket prices, and the only people that can afford tickets now are the high rollers in the corporate tea crumpet crowd

Sounds soft. Back when I was at LSU we started drinking friday through the night. Had to stay up and watch over our tailgate we set up

Reasons for "dent" in game day atmosphere

1) Every game is now on tv
2) The game day experience at home is far superior to sitting in the far reaches of the stadium for non-marquee games.
3) Tix have priced out some die-hard fans
4) Post game traffic is an absolute nightmare with no fix in sight
5) Students insistence on shoehorning STTD into any halfway decent band song = LSU DJ and more piped in music

I feel like we can beat this dead horse year after year, but the truth is, every game is nationally televised, prices have gone way up for the average fan, and a lot of people are cool with staying at the tailgate & watching the game on tv. The stadium will still show up for big night games and be electric. It just comes with the technology filled world we live in now. I'd be willing to bet that every other fanbase in the nation deals with the same things

At my house, comfortable recliner, better food & beverage choices, no line to the bathroom and can watch replays as I want.

I have a question. Why do people name their tailgate? I see tons of these when I walk to the stadium.

An example: "Cajun Mafia Tailgating". They had a tent and a sign with this on it.

But why? Who gives a shite what you call your tailgate, besides you?

This makes no sense. Last years Bama was insanity and it was a night gsme and everyone went hard for days beforehand.

Playing Grambling doesn't move the needle. And yeah in the 90's there was no excitement around lsu football

This is absolutely part of it.

This is also part of it. Traffic is a mother fricker and trying to accomplish this is not fun.

It was Grambling...of course the only reason to go out there was for the tailgating.

Wow, first home game of the year had fans out early and excited? What a shocking development that certainly didn't happen in the last 20 years

I've been saying this for a few years now. People don't like to hear it though.

We always started at 8am. I think the crowd is bigger bc more people show up now that don't have tickets than a long time ago.

I think people leave bc they hate the traffic. Back in the day we would just tailgate til midnight before driving home.
