i prefer front load only because the machines go below a laundry counter top, otherwise i would have a top load

Then tear out the countertop. We made the same mistake many others have going with the nice looking front loaders. No matter how often you clean them, they just end up not cleaning as well as a top loader. We had a decent GE set, and the rubber gasket at the door got a tear in it. I think a drawstring or something on some clothes got caught in the door and the spin cycle caused it to tear. It was an expensive fix. Cost about as much as a tire, and I had to dismantle the machine from the back to the front to get to it. My laundry room was a mess of parts strewn about. I got it repaired and we used it a few more years, then the matching dryer quits on us. I got rid of them both and bought a top load Maytag with an agitator and a dryer to match.

We have cabinets above our top loaders, and a 6-9” shelf under them that clears the open hatches of the washer and dryer. Take out the full countertop and put up a small shelf and cabinets.
