I've been using this one sprinkler for a bout two to three hours each evening. Ball park amount my water bill will increase? This is the first time I have ever watered my lawn in all my life. It's making a big difference but I'm concerned about what it's gonna coast me since I'm already paying twice the electric bill. Thanks for any input.

around $300 extra on the water bill

i made this mistake too and when i saw the water bill i was floored

you want to water for 10-15 minutes and thats enough, any more and its not helping, its just wasting water because its going deep into the ground not doing any good

i heard different opinions on early morning vs evening watering, and some, like me, do both morning and evening for 10-15 minutes.

you just have to decide how much more you want the water bill to increase.

$300 sounds high. I est. maybe $100 extra cost depending on how much your water cost.

I watered about 1/3 your amount, and my water bill a few days ago was about $25 higher than normal.

Bout tree-fiddy.
I wish this was a joke.
Add in my $471 Entergy bill and my modest Atmos bill and I will be paying $900 in fricking utilities this month.

Depending on pressure those type of sprinklers run about 12gpm* so about 720gpm per hour on full blast with solid water pressure. Look up what your utility charges, ours is 3.75 per 1,000 after I think the first 2500 which is included in the base rate.

30 days at 2.5hpd watering would be about 54,000 gallons for the month, so about $200. What can really sting is if you have to pay sewer on all the water that you use.

* you will see oscillating sprinklers given numbers from 5 to as much as 18 gpm. Mine is rated at 12 gpm at 70 psi.

The best thing to do is check your meter before and after watering when you aren't using a lot of water somewhere else in the house. Water meters are either in gallons or cubic feet usually if the meter is in cubic feet the company bills in cubic feet and vice versa but if not there are 7.5 gallons (close enough for government work) in a cubic foot.

I just went through this last month since I am watering some natural areas that I haven't watered in over 10 years and bought a couple of oscillating sprinklers since my sprinkler system doesn't cover those areas.

When I was watering my lawn on utility water, it was a lot. I was only watering enough to keep things alive. It pushed me to drill a well. There is a thread about people putting in irrigation systems to run off of utility water. They are gonna be shocked.

Yup. I want to do a well at some point.

Some places will let you have a separate line/meter for irrigation that only charges consumption and not sewer on the amount use. My city doesn't offer that. Long term wise more economical for the well for the amount if irrigation I use

Not to sound like a know it all but it’s better to water longer and less frequently because it allows the roots to grow deeper vs shallow

One thing to conceder too is you are being charged waste water as well on your bill even tho it’s going into the ground. An idea might be to call the water co and see if you can convince them that the extra water VS previous bills is going into tue growing and see if you can get a waste water credit. I have a built in irrigation system on a separate meter for that reason.

Usually you have to call ahead to get the sewer charge taken off. I do it when I fill my pool and they give you a one time exemption once a year. You have to estimate the usage to get the exemption

This depends on if you have trees.

It’s more than you’d think. I use one of those to hit hot spots instead of running the whole system too much.

Here in Tejas and I’m ashamed to admit the water we’ve pulled out of disappearing lakes to keep our lawn and plants on life support. Neighbors have been talking about going native with landscaping with these insane summers happening more often. I believe that will be a growing trend.

The way I’d have to look at it would be how much does 2-3 months of frequent watering cost compared to replacing a full yard of lawn sod.
We live in north east Texas and alot of yards 3/4 acre or larger have their own deep water well’s designated for lawn use. I questioned the guy we bought from because that seemed like a large additional expense when you’re building but he said that the local water municipality was so expensive that a few years of watering justified the cost of having a well, 4 years later in this home and I realize he was right.

On 2 acres but watering just around the house... withing 50-75 ft with 2 oscillating sprinklers. I run them for 4-5 hours and move them to the next location.

If you are on a slab and know anything about hydraulics you do not want the ground around the perimeter of your house shrinking.

I got another notice last week from the water company telling me they think we have a water leak.
