Considering purchasing a more robust propane deep fryer. I'm tired of having to change out oil every use of the freestanding burner stand and aluminum pot units. I'd like to get something more substantial and hopefully easier to clean/maintain. I've been looking at the 2.5 and 4 gallon options from Bayou Classic and RV Works. Can anyone give some feedback on either brand and the gallon capacity? Mostly just looking to fry some fish after fishing trips. Around 20-40 fillets.

I have the single basket RV fryer. Its a great fryer but takes almost 3 gallons of oil. To be honest, I only use it for a larger crowd. If I'm frying 5 lbs or so I use an electric that takes a gallon of oil. The electric is easier cleanup as you can put everything but the element/control panel in the dishwasher.

im the opposite. ill heat my 4gal for 1 serving of fries. there really is no clean up... you can keep your oil in there for weeks/months. then just a major clean up every few months. Which reminds me i have to do that...

I read where you can buy industrial fryer cleaner tablets and just fill the hold with water and one of those tablet and drain after boiling. Is that easy or is there more scrubbing involved that I should be prepared for?

there is some scrubbing... the first time i did it it was a bitch because i didnt think of the boiling with soap water. my FIL said he uses simple green and water... boils for a while then drain it.

mine is gonna need a deeper clean because the lid got left open and it rained.. I thought it wasnt a lot of water so i tried to boil it out.... yea dont do that..it foamed up and oil went everywhere.

I have the 4 gallon, love it. It's great to cook an entire meal pretty much at once with the capacity. I change my oil roughly every 6 months depending on how much it's been used and how it's looking. Pro tip, using these pucks makes cleaning it 10x easier:

The more oil capacity, the less the temperature will drop when you put food in it. It makes is stable. The benefit of those fryers is the heat source is not at the very bottom, so the dregs that would normally burn settle to the bottom, and your oil stays fresh.

I have the Angola State Penitentiary brand. They go on sale every Sunday this October.

Do they have a store front or something? Whats the price? I found a cheaper version of the RV Works fryer on the Webstaurant Store

They have an arts and crafts sale the same days as their rodeos. They are around $300 if I recall. No store front that I’m aware of.

Both of those fryers work pretty damn well. For 20-30 fillets, I'd go with a single basket.

I haven’t been for years, but it’s very kid friendly. The rodeo has some good events with inmate cowboys. The traffic getting out would piss off the Pope.

How often do you fry? Do you leave your fryer outside under cover, in a garage?

I'd go 4 gal out of those two. Reason being you can get the big jugs of oil that are just over 4gal. That gives you a little extra to dump in as time goes on. It also gives you a jug to dump all the old oil in to toss. I have sold some of the RV units to some TD peeps at a discount (may have some on the shelf still I can look). I love mine except that I wish I sprung for the aluminum version. Mainly for rust...I do have some. It doesn't really matter to me but may to some. The business end is clean and protected in the oil so I don't care too much. Def use those pucks posted above to clean and leave the baskets in when you do to clean them as well. Just so you know it will leave some white stains on the regular RV fryer if/when it spills over but again it doesn't bother me. The one from the webstraunt store does not have wheels where the RV one does...makes it mobile...I would not get one without in my situation.

RV Works

I have 2 of the six gallon fryers from RV Works. Excellent quality. I bought them for an annual fish fry I do for about 100 people.

For home use, I would probably get the 2.5 gallon version. Have been tempted to get that but I have a 5 liter electric fryer that I keep outside that handles what I need at home.
