I'm not saying he was good at Sunderland... he was dreadful.
But around that same time, he was burying hat tricks against Bosnia and scoring against Germany. Confidence matters.

If you look at the statistics for that Sunderland team they were actually much better with Jozy on the pitch. More goals scored, less conceded. Unfortunately he got zero service and their best winger was a pedophile.

That is great and all, but those are both friendlies. Jozy always seemed to be THE GUY that the USMNT needed up top, but the truth is, he only had 1 goal against a decent opponent in a competitive match against Spain in the 2009 Confederations Cup. He scored lots of goals against low level CONCACAF teams like Jamaica, TNT, Panama, etc...but when we needed him the most against good teams in competitive matches, he could never find the net.
