I think it had more to do with Paolo Di Canio being clinically insane and Sunderland being just as volatile. Pretty much everyone for the club from 2013 through their relegation was trash for them.
If anything, it shows that just because a big 4 league club may want you, doesn't always mean it's the right move for your career. Prime Jozy was clearly talented enough to play for a mid-table EPL side, but sometimes shite happens.

I just remember him shanking a goal at point blank range and the announcers absolutely burying him.
Sunderland was a cluster for sure, but he wasn't very good. Both can be true.
