I'm not, is it just me?

I'm 21ish years into what I would consider modern-day gaming and my favorite games are essentially shooters..I can't remember Atari/Dreamcast-era games that were story-driven and the only games I vividly remember from my Nintendo days are ExciteBike, Battletoads, Waverace, Pilotwings, and a few more that seem to lead into the reason I like what I like now.

Old school CoD..the BF series (even the shite ones), Tom Clancy-named games where you can skip the cut scenes, etc.

I absolutely hate "your princess is in another castle" and "the settlers need more food" storylines

I got downvotes for suggesting Starfield was just a newer NMS, so I guess I'll get what's coming on this one too

Depends on the type of gamer you are

I have friends that are casual gamers that only play shooters and that's cool

It's one of my bigger hobbies so I go through different moods. Right now I'm only Halo/Fortnite in prep for the amount of time I'll be playing Starfield exclusively.

People probably downvoted you about NMS because Starfield is going to have hundreds of hours of more content and it'll 100x more polished than NMS. It's like comparing a Ferrari and a Daewoo

Shooters didn't really escape that type of criticism/acclaim either though. Typically the CoDs generally agreed to be the best also have what are considered to be among the best campaigns. Thus the reverence for characters like Soap and Ghost.

I don't have time to sink a thousand hours into an online shooter with no actual end goal. Give me a game that has a good story and allows me to beat it in under 50 hours and sticks with me long after.

God of War Ragnorak was awesome.

Plague Tale Requiem was great.

Im all in for more games like those.

Each person has their own preference. Some people lean further one way or another.

I loathe shooters mostly because I suck and just get gunned down by an unseen opponent every 30 seconds. I used to enjoy the Modern Warfare and Call of Duty games when they included really compelling campaigns, but now multiplayer is all they're known for.

I also love games where you just play and progress. Stardew Valley, Farming Simulator, Snowrunner. I don't need a great story if it's good progressive gameplay.

Then I also love an amazing RPG. Witcher 3, Mass Effect trilogy, RDR2. Though I can't replay those as much as the progression type games.

No Man's Sky ended up being really great but was a bit short on depth. If they can bring a Skyrim type experience into space, I'll play it for the next decade.

Depends on why you game. If you game as stand in for sport, you'll be drawn to the games you're drawn to. If you game as a stand in for other forms of narrative media like movies, books, etc, then you'll be drawn to other types of games.

Some people would rather watch American Gladiators than Breaking Bad. Some would rather watch Breaking Bad than American Gladiators. Some enjoy both; some enjoy neither.

I used to enjoy competitive gaming, but now I would rather scratch my competitive itch in other ways. Now I game for the enjoyment that comes from experiencing something that was specifically crafted to be experienced in a particular way. Neither is right or wrong. Just different priorities.

Enjoy your xbox. Based on sales data, you're in the minority.

I like both, few games have a good cohesive story though. I haven't watched more than 5 seconds of a single story scene in diablo 4. Starfield will probably be the same.

I like optional stories - dig in as much or as little as you’d like.

Which is yet another reason I believe in Fromsoft superiority. You can go down the lore rabbit hole (my choice) or just “STR/FTH goes wham” till your heart’s content.

I'm not gonna lie. I hate stories. Why does every damn game have to have a story? I don't care, I want gameplay. Fromsoft games are excellent.

I've played all Halos and I skipped every cinema scene because I don't care about the story, the gameplay is excellent.

Unless the game is Witcher 3, there is no reason to have a long drawn out story.

I like games with limited story.
I like games that are heavy on story.

What I don't like are MOOVIE games.

Watch cutscene, walk slowly while characters talk about feelings, scripted action set piece, QTE, watch cutscene and get excited for next cutscene.

It was interesting when games first started doing those things, but it's been boring, games journalist bait for the past 10 years.

I like games that have a lot of lore but not necessarily a story you have to sit through. I like dark souls, Elden Ring, hollow knight, method of story telling.

There have been some story games that have completely gripped me though. The metal gear solid series for example. I long for the next cutscenes and don't so much care about the gameplay. I also like story sequences in JRPGs too, although I would say starting with FFX the story elements started becoming a little too much and I prefer older games with no voice acting.

So it depends on a game by game basis. I think the biggest issue is more often than not, there is a half baked story that you're forced to engage with and it's just not interesting and that makes us think that stories in games are bad. In reality a game where the story is well developed and interesting is as good as watching a good TV show or a movie to me.

My most recent example of this fail is Diablo 4. They invested all these resources into the story that sounds like it was written by a 5th grader, but they made it so you're forced to play through it. It should be the other way around.

I’m a story guy, but it’s okay not to be. People game for different reasons. Some want challenge. Some want a power fantasy. Some want to socialize with friends. Others want to escape into a different world.

As I get older, I realized that while I still prefer story-based games, I much prefer those that keep you in control. I cannot stand most long cutscenes, but I can tolerate essentially the same content being fed to me if it means I can still retain control of my character and interact with the world during story segments.

I also find that most modern video game stories suck, so it falls back on the gameplay to keep me hooked.

Case in point, I used to think Assassin's Creed games had some of the best storylines in gaming, and the writing just completely fell off a cliff when Unity was released, and the games haven't recovered since.

I just found out I HAVE to give up competitive games and most pvp. One of my meds as I have gotten old and sick gives me “dyskinesia” (think palsy, uncontrolled muscle spasms making my hands shake. Can’t eat soup those days either unless I use a straw or something). It can actually be quite comical watching my player character run from here to there zigzag all over the place.

Not necessarily story games but slower paced from now on for me. Maybe a WoWarships kinda pvp something like that where waiting reload slows things down.

No, and the proliferation of FPS and MOBA games bears that out.

There are pretty much two types of gamers: those who want to play combat games where you have to be hyper-vigilant at almost all times and those who want to experience a story (read also as: feel like they have a personal investment in the game/character/story).

I would wager that many gamers vacillate between the two to varying degrees with the minority being those on the fringe. I fall into the latter category far more often than I do the former one.

For the FPS/MOBA games, story matters little or not at all so the creators can focus far more on combat balance, maps, etc. For those who want more of a story, the story becomes every bit as important as mechanics.

The problem is that writing a story, crafting the CGI, etc. all takes a LOT more time and money. Today, most gamers want a sandbox aspect with some sort of main storyline where their choices matter.

That's about like saying Apex: Legends is just a newer Call of Duty. In a very general sense (like "they are in the same genre") it's true, but likely not once you get more granular.

I don't need a story in everything, certainly. Some games, like Rimworld you kind of make the entire story yourself based on who you get and what happens.

With Civ-style games, the random map and tech tree sort of write a story of sorts if you want to think that way.

I don't need a story for racing games, fighting games or shooters (and I don't play very many of any of them lately, although I want to get into racing games with the grandchildren). They great enhancements to enjoyment for things like Skyrim or Red Dead Redemption.
