How important is the look of your swing to you?

First let me say, I never video my swing and I've never had lessons. I played with friends in college and then like a lot of people quit the game for years while raising a family. I started back playin about 4 years ago and play once a week now at 48. I've got my handicap down to a 7.7 and had grand visions of maybe shooting par on an easy course. But this weekend I played with my brother and he was making a video of the experience and videoed a few of my shots. My swing looks horrible! That's all I noticed in the video. If I saw my swing, I would say no better than 25+ handicap. Now I'm thinking, it's no way to get to below 5 with my swing mechanics. Looking at my stats this year , 73% fairways hit and 50% GIR, are decent but I'm not sure if I've hit my limit with my swing. I had none of these thoughts before seeing my swing on video. How important is the look of your swing to you?

Seeing as i don't have to look at my own swing, not very.

You would be leading the PGA Tour in fairway% and not too shabby in GIR. Your short game is what's keeping you from getting there.

Forget your swing you need to practice putting.

Not important to me. I videoed my swing a couple of times and when I watch the replay, I threw up.

So what irons do you have? I mean if they’re 10 year old players type irons, and the people you’re playing with have newer game improvement stuff, they could just have stronger lofted clubs and really only be a club ahead of you.
I’ve played all over as a single this summer, and got paired with 15-20 different guys. I’m alright, 85-90 on a decent day, 95 on a bad. I struggle putting. So, I’m not very good, but I get around without getting behind or embarrassing myself. I hit it (spray it) 265. 285 if I’m hitting it really well and the course is firm, which isn’t bombing it, but I’m good with it as an out of shape 36 yr old.
There were a couple in the 35-50 year old range that were longer than me, but the guys that could just beat everybody’s arse were the 225-240 hitters that are just slow, steady, and straight. Hit fairways, hit greens, make putts. No implosions, very few 3 putts. Played with this one Asian doctor in Birmingham the other day. I played awesome, sweated my fat arse off in a cart, and shot 86. This dude was mid 40’s and about 165; he strolled up in mid July with a push cart, entire bag was TaylorMade Sim2 from driver to PW, and I was like oh shite, how’s this going to work. He walked 18, never broke a sweat. Hit it 225 tops, and shot 78. Just never faltered.
Focus on your short game, and you’ll be fine.

Well this is a question with two answers. Some of by best work and visualization has been done using a mirror or video and then it feels like you have a kind of picture in your head of what your swing looks like it.
If it comes down to which swing is best honestly who cares if it works for you and you are happy with your game. I have seen tons of guys who have bad swings kill the ball. Also lots of guys may not be able to swing certain ways due to physical limitations.

It's not important however I do cringe when I look at my swing replays

I'm 48 years old and my irons are Ping I E1. they are traditional lofts. I planned to get fitted for new irons this fall or winter, but I'm not a huge fan of game improvement irons. You seem to lose consistency on distance. I guess I wasn't sure if others cringed that much seeing their own swing

way too important
I will deconstruct my swing to try and make it look better even if I’m playing well, which is why I’m constantly telling my buddies “I’m working on something new” but never really improve.
Same thing as playing an ugly game improvement iron imo, I would never touch one even if it did help my score. ain’t touching that ugly shite

Not, I’ve played for 60 years, carry a 6, and don’t want to see any part of it.

There are many ways to wield a club effectively.
Even at the top levels of championship golf there are idiosyncratic swings.
If we all looked like Ernie Els or Fred Couples swinging the club, it would be boring.
Results matter. Looks don’t count for much.

I could give two fricks how it looks as long as it scores.
I would rock the ugliest swing of all time if it scored in the 70s.

I know my swing (set up) is extremely odd due to all of my injuries. However, it works for me, and I get to keep playing without pain.
I never want to see it on a video. I don’t even like seeing my shadow

I hate taking a shot with the sun behind me and I can see my shadow swing. Can’t image what it looks like on video.
