Scheduling Oddities

I noticed a few weird trends while looking through historic LSU football schedules.
LSU traveled to Athens to play Georgia on October 17th, 1953. These two schools did not play each other again until October 14,1978. 25 years!
Similarly, LSU played Vandy in Nashville November 2nd, 1957. They did not play each other again until October 9th, 1976.
What's the deal with this? I understand not playing them as often as our closer rivals, but gaps of 25 and 19 years for intraconference opponents seems pretty ridiculous. Does anyone have any information about what went into these scheduling decisions? I'm very curious.
