I'm just here to LOL at the replies.

This is what happens when you ask about deer hunting with a shotgun on a message board where posters who ask "what deer rifle should I get?" are told they must have $5000 for an elephant rifle with the hubble telescope mounted on top of it to kill a deer inside 200 yards.

For what you've described, a shotgun loaded with slugs is an ideal setup. Just ask anyone who hunts shotgun only states or states with shotgun only areas or seasons, like Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Delaware, Maine, Rhode Island, Minnesota, Michigan, New York, and Virginia.

Sorry someone hurt your feelings. Many folks on here have advocated for lighter calibers and lower power scopes. Deer aren’t that tough. A 12ga slug is gonna make them plenty dead, but unless you’re going all out shooting sabots it’s probably not going to exit reliably, typically the gun is gonna be long and unwieldy in the tree unless you go out and buy one specially for this, and it’s either gonna kick the everliving shite out of you or weigh 10 lbs. That’s far from ideal to me, but you do you.

I’m lol’ing at your reply. In the states you mentioned, most are using rifled barrels on those shotguns, which take the effective range out to 100-150 yds or so.
