Imo Canon couldn't go into the game today and rush for 1100+ yards against the Maason Smith/Harold Perkins type players when his opponents D lines were all white, 6'0 210 lbs. Recruiting is much more succinct in finding the best players today, it's not just white guys, and compared to 50s-70s a large amount of players just walked on and did tryouts to start on the team. Today has top 500 player camps, intense workouts, meal plans. Just way different, more money in it, hundreds of millions spent by teams.

It's not comparing apples to apples, so this list is 2000s players: Non-active players, college performance only considered, not NFL

1. Joe Burrow
2. Tyrann Mathieu (don't think there will ever be a more dynamic defender/returner in CF)
3. Leonard Fournette
4. Patrick Peterson
5. Devin White
6. Glenn Dorsey
7. Jamarr Chase
8. Justin Jefferson
9. Tyson Jackson
10. Mo Claiborne
11. Tre White
12. Jamal Adams
13. OBJ
14. Laron Landry
15. La'El Collins

17. Eric Reid
18. Marcus Spears
19. Derek Stingley (For 19/20 only really)
20. Michael Clayton
21. Andrew Whitworth
22. Josh Reed
23. Jarvis Landry
24. K'Lavon Chaisson
25. Patrick Queen
26. Kevin Minter
27. Michael Brockers
28. Chad Jones
29. Dwayne Bowe
30. Guice
31. CEH
32. Devery Henderson
33. Jeremy Hill
34. DJ Chark

IDK, Cannon would be the fastest and strongest RB on our team today.

Are we time traveling him straight from the 50s and planting him into today or are we pretending he's born in modern times and has the same upbringing as athletes today? Because we can go both ways on this. Jim Brown wouldn't have the stats he did back then in today's game either, he'd be another expendable RB in today's game.

It's not fair to compare players of an old era to now when there's been so much advancement in training, conditioning, diet, etc. It is fair to compare them to their contemporaries because they all had relatively the same training and regimen and whoever came out the best was the best amongst them. And Cannon was the best back then.

If you had just said best players from the 2000s on and left it at that we could have engaged in an honest and fair discussion and start listing. I don't see why you have to go and shite on the players that came before in order to bring that up, but you felt the need to and now that's what the whole thread's going to be, and probably what you wanted so enjoy.

Are you assuming he gets his 1950s training and they get their 2000’s training? It’s is why this narrative that guys from back then would be worse now. They would be getting the same training and nutritional advantages that these guys get.

They were far and away better than their contemporaries without that. Why would they not be with that advantage?

A few glaring omissions:

Chad Lavalais
Ben Wilkerson
Jamarcus
Claude Wroten
Bradie James

Also, Godchaux, Freak and Lac would probably go before Ego. And I’d strongly consider Flynn and Trev Faulk.

But like I said in that other thread, it’s your list. And putting something like this together is tough (hell, I had to edit to add a few omissions already).

If you have a guy who's 6'-6'1, 210lbs, and runs a sub 10 second 100 meter dash, he's gonna play no matter what era we're talking about. "White guy" or not.

Seems like you’re desperate to bash on white guys.

Most of the guys on your list of today's players would not have been able to graduate High School in the 50's. School was harder then, just go back and look at some of the tests from that era.

Interesting point of view from someone who had never seen Cannon play (or seen any film of his, other than his epic 89 yard touchdown run in 1959)

How about letting people who actually know give you an opinion. Billy Cannon ran a 9.6 100 yd dash. That’s faster than any time Founette ran. He threw a shot put 56’ for the state record. He was big and fast - REALLY FAST.
He also played on all three teams in college - offense, defense and special teams. He was a VERY STRONG man at 70. His grip was unreal. Ask the prisoners who often called him Legend.

He was also a bad arse that was a thug in whipping peoples arse when he was a kid in HIGH SCHOOL.

Cannon would have dominated in this era just like Casanova.

There was a pic of Casanova with that 2011 (time frame) backfield after practice one day and he dwarfed all of them. ALL OF THEM. He would have been the best safety in that team then and that included Reid and Jones and whomever. He could have play LB or corner.

You. Have no clue because you’re a kid and never seen or shook the hands of these men.

Your post clearly shows your lack of respect for prior generations and how little you know about LSU football history. Talent and speed transcend generations, regardless if someone played in the 1950’s or playing in todays game.

I have no doubt that former LSU All-Americans Steve Van Buren, Jim Taylor, Bill Cannon, Tommy Casanova, and Charles Alexander could play in today’s game. You give them the same weight training, 7on7 competitions, nutrition program, access to camps, and social media recruiting, and they would still dominate today’s game like they did many decades ago.

LSU played 10 regular season games during Billy Canon’s era. He averaged 12 carries per game and 5.2 ypc over his 3 year CFB career. Fast forward to today’s game behind a dominant O-line. Give Canon 25 carries per game over a 12 game regular season, and he’s putting up 1500 yds per season. Charles Alexander would be equally as dominant in the modern football era.

You are heavily underestimating just how fast and strong Billy Cannon was. The dude was a freak and faster the the majority of our recent RBs of the last 2 decades.
