If Magic was having anal sex with women in LA who were sleeping with bisexual dudes, that’s certainly a way to get HIV, if you’re unlucky.
They could also have been shooting up drugs and sharing needles. Isn’t that how the guy from Dallas Buyer’s club got it?

Apparently that guy was actually bisexual IRL.
Heroin is certainly a way to get it but I’ve always heard Magic was not a guy with drug problems and only a moderate drinker.
I think after Bernard King ended up doing some hard drugs in the early 80s, the NBA for really worried they would lose a second generation of stars (this was pre-Len Bias).
Luckily for them, the next generation didn’t have a lot of drug users as none of Isaiah Thomas, Michael Jordan, Hakeem, Malone, Ewing, or Magic were big partiers when they got to the League. And Bird and Barkley stuck to booze.
But that explains how the NBA was very quick to ban guys on teams with the promising non-drug using stars.
It explains why. Andrew Wiggins’s father got banned so quickly on the Rockets, and the Jazz had a lot of players suspended.
