I don’t watch baseball as much as when I was younger. I follow my teams but it is not like it used to be where I know about every team anymore.

The Pirates used to have a history of being triple A plus. They drafted well and had good young talent but when it came time to pay they didn’t. You would then look around the league at former Pirates players and say man if they kept that team together they would be competing. I’m not sure if that type of culture has really changed in Pittsburgh.

Edit: fyi though I’m with you on struggling teams. I’m a Cubs fan. I follow the Astros too now but the Cubs are my team. I remember how cool it was seeing the Cajun names in Chicago. Fontenot and Theriot.

I'll root for Skenes as long as he doesn't pitches against the Cubs. The Cubs have been bottom dwellers also but I really became a fan when they had Ryan Theriot on that team. They drafted some of my favorite players also in DJ Lamahieu and Lange.

I'll say. I've only been with them since '79, but yeah; they are pretty thin on "thick".

Been a fan since the We Are Family team in '79.

Same. I was already a Steelers fan, and when I noticed (as a 9 year old) that Pittsburgh had a baseball team that was awesome too, I became a lifelong fan (the only kind of fan I know how to be). Unfortunately, the Pirates thing didn't work out as well as the Steelers thing did.

On the other hand, I'm not really much of a baseball fan, and it really frees up your summers when your team is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs by Memorial Day.

That means you played at Forbes Field with Clemente, Maz, and the Deacon.

Very, very awesome.

Living in Georgia, my manager is a Pirates fan, though I mostly hear from her about the Steelers and Penn State football, and how the Pirates suck. But that can easily change with Skenes.

I think the trend is changing and we will see more college players go on to be stars in MLB.

Doubtful.

Skenes will be a Yankee or a Dodger in less than 5 years. Enjoy him for now.

I hope more of you become Pirate fans and join the three of us in Louisiana who have ever even heard of them.
My daughter married into a “Pittsburgh” family, so I pull for them a little.

Skenes will get traded right when he hits his prime, just like they did Gerrit Cole

I found your baseball reference page. This is really awesome. Sorry to hear your career ended prematurely. 1957 looked like you were finding it and were on your way.

Art "Red" Swanson

Have you ever thrown out a first pitch at an LSU baseball game? If not we need to make this happen.
