32% of American Adults completely cut off at least 1 member of their immediate family.

For the 32% on here, what's the reason?

I'm not in the 32% but I'd imagine the reasons are

drugs
money
mental illness

Nephew (in law) and his 3rd wife were living with my mother in law (his grandmother). They are sorry as hell and she took them and their two children in so they wouldn’t be homeless. It was discovered that they had been stealing jewelry from her and pawning it. Nobody, except his mother, in the family speaks to him at all..I will personally beat his arse if I ever see him again. Mother in law is now deceased, he was told he wasn’t welcome at the funeral (I didn’t agree with this and wouldn’t have beat his arse there).

Over the past several years, I’d imagine politics is up there on the list as well (even though it probably coincides with mental health)

Sister cut herself out of the family after we 'never accepted' her husband as part of the family.

An example of us being 'non-accepting': he gave the eulogy at my other sister's Memorial Mass.

Strangely enough, he cut himself out of his family 4-5 years before.

He also called me to ask if it was OK to miss my wedding because he got invited to a NASCAR race

I didn't cut them off, they cut me off

Try to be more than reasonable and some just can't do it...so long I guess

My father-in-law cut off his mom.

She didn't like his fiancee/wife.

After 35 years of marriage without any improvement in the relationship with his mom, he walked away.

What did he consider not being accepted?

Also, sounds like he wanted all of this.

Mom had an affair, left my dad, stole money from me
Brother 1 is a thief frick up on drugs
Brother 2 is a pathological liar

Haven't spoke to any of them in years, what do I win?

ETA: grandma got cut off in the mom mix, didn't speak with her for the last year of her life. Basically, cut off my mom's entire side of the family. Especially after I sued her

I've never understood the logic of tolerating disrespectful insufferable aholes just because they are family.

My grandmother had an uncle who had a falling out with his father when he was 18 or 19. He lit out for California and nobody heard from him for over 30 years. Then he just showed up again one day. They were in some contact after that. My dad corresponded with one of his daughters after the uncle died. Apparently he had told his family tall tales about growing up on a plantation and having to leave after he killed a man over a card game. None of which was true

Haven’t officially cut anyone off, but I don’t talk to my siblings unless we just happen to be at a family function at the same time, which is rare.

Drugs, mental illness, narcissism

BIL got married. His wife is a complete loser and for reasons still unknown decided she hates my mother-in-law and, by proxy, my wife (BIL's sister). My wife has been in the same room with my BIL's wife a grand total of 6 times over the last 3 years. On none of the occasions were the interactions long or in any way uncordial. Nevertheless, BIL's wife told him he essentially had to choose between her or his mother and sister as she refused to ever be in the same room with them again. BIL evidently chose his wife because he has ceased all communication with my wife/his sister. In turn, my wife has ended her relationship with her brother.

Just an incredibly bizarre situation because my wife hasn't interacted with her brother's wife long enough to seemingly develop that level of hate. There was literally no animus event to seemingly give rise to such hate. Yet, my wife is angrier at her brother who chose to completely turn his back on his family. A family he had a great relationship with before he met his wife.

I'm nearing this with one sibling. I firmly believe he has Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Reading through this thread, I lucked out. My family seems to be getting more functional the older we all get.
