Would be a perfect match. He made Stanford relevant. Stanford and Northwestern are the same kind of schools when it comes to academics and culture. Seems like it would be a good natural fit.

I would agree in most cases but Shaw is likely burned out and enjoys time away from major coaching. His last few years at Stanford were brutal but he did have some really good units

Good lord no… Shaw was handed a great situation and slowly made it terrible.

I don’t think people have a true appreciation for the absolute awful current state of the NW program… they’ve won 1 game in the last 22 months.

Shaw completely checked out and was just cashing checks for the past 3-4 years.

I think he's much more likely to end up the AD somewhere than coaching.

I think Skip Holtz would be a great add here. He's going to run a clean program, he'll get guys to come play and compete. He is also a guy that can come in clean house, get the culture foundation laid, and then go out in a few years. His last name still carries some weight in that area of the country. Also has shown he can still do X's and O's with the work he has done in the USFL. He won't have you beating the top dogs in the B1G, but he'll have you at 6-6 or 7-5 playing in bowl games after a few season, and being in games against the big dogs in the conference.

Northwestern is going to struggle with the same thing that Stanford did.

Early signing, NIL, and the transfer portal have all set nerd schools back

early signing started in 2017. Standford won 9 games in 2018, then 4-8, 4-2, 3-9, and 3-9

with everything that just happened, good luck getting the academia at NW to play ball

he's won just 14 games over the last 4 years, and they are underdog in all 12 games this year. He checked out a few years back.

I think that would be an incredibly lazy hire. Shaw lost his stuff, and just because we’re talking 2 academic places doesn’t validate the passive hire.

Get someone young and hungry like Jamie Chadwell. He’d take it because the money is legit and 8 wins gets you a big time gig

David Shaw inherited a program Harbaugh built and after five years, has managed to go
4-8
4-2
3-9
3-9

I suppose if they were resigned to inevitable decline. Shaw oversaw the devolution of Stanford football, not its ascension to any new heights.

Dan Mullen hates recruiting and won’t have to at NW as their academic requirements will prevent him from having to get into highly competitive recruiting battles

He can get 2 and 3 stars to win 7-8 games a year

Does well when he has low expectations

They might be able to do better but definitely could do worse

They should hire Willie Fritz. He would have went to Georgia Tech, which also is a great fit, but they would not offer enough for assistants, recruiting, etc.

He's the type of program builder they need. And money won't be a problem there.
