Something more than just a ride around a lake in an airboat?

Late July, taking a yankee and a west coaster.

The one right off the interstate in LaPlace is legit. We’ve taken several classes there on field trips.

Don't. A swamp tour in the heart of summer sounds miserable.

Do an airboat ride instead. It's more expensive but a lot more fun and you won't die from the heat.

Went out with Cajun Encounters many years ago and they were great.

Given that they are located on the West Pearl right at the western foot of the drawbridge that is closed, it might make for some difficulty getting there.

This guy was great. They do small groups so it’s not like a big tour with strangers and he has a degree in LA wildlife resources and knows a ton.

don’t think you could have picked a worse time of year for a swamp tour

it’ll be raining buckets or hotter than hell, no in between

I see that the Matherne family is still running their tour down in Des Allemands, Airboat Tours by Authur. It's been 20 years, but even back then they really knew the local area. Plus Spahr's Seafood is basically next door.

Just make sure to plan it when the water starts going down so perhaps a snake falls in the boat and scares the yank's back north.

Dr. Wagner’s Honey Island Swamp Tour in Slidell is legit. Part of it is on the Pearl River, part is in Honey Island Swamp. Plenty gators, the star being a 12 footer (I used to feed him marshmallows out of my little flat boat). You’ll see a few snakes as well, and they’ll also stop at a spot where they’ll call a bunch of wild hogs and raccoons right to the boat and feed them. Not an airboat - they have big covered flat boats that hold like 20 people.

Not a swamp tour, but I took my boys to Kleibert and Sons off of 55 just south of Hammond, and it was awesome.

"Hey what's in that horse trough we're standing next to?"
Only the biggest Alligator snapping turtle I've ever seen in person. Don't stick your hand in there boys.

Hey kids wanna hold a 4' gator with no mouth tape? You got it! Plus a various assortment of constrictors. My oldest loved it.

Great hands on experience that I couldn't believe still existed in 2022. They may offer swamp tours, not positive. 10/10 overall though.

If you want to do your own cheap trip you can drive yourself to Jean Lafitte national park. They have a nice nature set up up front and then you walk the boardwalks for a good ways and see gators and snakes
