Can anyone explain why Washington Parish melons are supposed to be the best?

I honestly don’t know, but we don’t have much going for us. Just let us have the watermelons. We are bringing back the Watermelon festival the 7-9 this week.

Everyone knows if you grow a watermelon in Washington Parish, it tastes better. That watermelon grown 5 feet outside of the parish doesn't taste as good!!!

Nah, seriously, it's a marketing urban-legend thing. I love me a Washington Parish because my parents always loved them and I know they are local. But I'm not naive enough to think just because they come from one parish, they are automatically better than the one grown 10 miles away. It's more nostalgia and knowing they are local (which doesn't mean they will taste better).

If you're from west of the Atchafalaya, then sugarland are the best.

The melons in particular grown in the Pine - Thomas area of Washington Parish are seemingly sweeter and have that crisp rough texture. I've heard it has to do with the sandy clay loam soil that allows for the right uptake of nutrients while still allowing for efficient draining. There are several areas in the Parish with this type of soil. The best jumbo peanuts I've ever eaten come from Angie and other areas in the parish.

Savy Marketing campaign.

Same with Smith County in Mississippi. There are folks here who refuse to eat one until someone puts a hand written sign on their pickup that says "Smith County Watermelons. Never occurs to them the melon likely came from the Produce Suppliers Warehouse on the east end of the farmer's market lot just west of The Medical Center in Jackson.
