Saw a pair of these on my pond this morning. I live in North Alabama and these are the first ones I have ever seen. From reading on here seems like y’all are seeing them pretty regular in Louisiana.

Yep. Seeing more and more of them around here. They are dumb, fly slow, and don’t decoy much but definitely eat good.

Last year, near my house in Metairie, there were thousands in Lafreniere Park.
Guy I know that lives near Audubon Park in Uptown NOLA claims that they spend the nights in the park, and shortly after daybreak they fly across the Mississippi River to Cargill in Westwego to feed on spillover grain. Don't know if this is true or not.

They were checking out my nesting boxes so maybe we will start seeing more around here.
That one duck seems to be saying you are coming in too damn hot!

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks have steadily expanded their range in the southern U.S. and their numbers have increased by approximately 6% per year from 1966–2019, according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey.
That works out to 22 times as many in the US as in 1966. They are common now in areas where they didn't used to exist. The original range was mostly Mexico to South America, as far south as northern Argentina. Now a few have even made it to Canada.

Are they considered a puddle duck?

Did you build it, if so you got plans?

Built about 23 of them and do not have plans.
They have been up about 15 years and after looking at the pictures I probably need to trim the trees around them. Looking like the predators will not have any problem accessing them.
The box is made out of aluminum mounted on schedule 80 pvc.

Did you just guess on the “hole diameter” or look that up?
I wonder if there is a size that wood ducks prefer/can use that they can’t? I have seen Screech Owls in the ones around me and whistlers. These old boxes’ holes might be too big. Just how certain bird houses have certain sized holes for certain bird species.

We just used a regular hole saw. It is supposed to be 3.5” tall and 4.5” wide. Probably why I have mergansers and whistlers nesting in them. Probably best to make it out of wood also. I suspect that aluminum we used gets pretty hot inside.

Just started seeing them in Florida about 10 years ago.
First just north of the Everglades and now at my Camp in the Big Bend.
Seem to me to be more of a Wading , Walk the edges kinda Duck.
Not real afraid of people...
