Backstory- My dad passed away Monday and I’m trying to eliminate some bills for my mom, Directv in this case. Trying to make life manageable for my mom just on social security so she doesn’t have to dip in to retirement accounts.

What’s y’all’s recommended cable streaming service that I can split between 2 households? I’m just going to tell her to cancel DTV and share this with her so she doesn’t have to pay anything, I’ll just get it.

I googled and compared Hulu plus live, YouTube tv, directv stream, etc…, but I couldn’t exactly figure out which one would allow multiple screens across different households. Didn’t want to sign up for something and realize it wasn’t going to work.

Thanks for whatever help y’all could offer!

First, sorry for your loss.

To your question, I'm not sure if any of them explicitly allow multi-household streaming with just one account, but I can tell you that we shared a YTTV account with my MIL for several years and never had an issue.

Edit: But I wouldn't worry too much whatever you choose, the best thing about the streaming services is no contracts so you can try one for a month or two and if it doesn't work try something else. No real loss.

Edit 2: Also I want to say great job helping cut bills, and I'd suggest digging into everything. Might be able to get a cheaper cell plan (and of course cut landline if applicable), and there may be a cheaper internet service available as well. Streaming TV needs only ~5mbps so 10mbps leaves some overhead and would work just fine (assuming she doesn't use much internet otherwise).

Hulu is 100% a no for this, I can't even log in without calling and sitting on the phone with their support if my isp changes my ip address.

My in-laws have yttv at their house and at a small country house they have and it works fine.

Ditto what others said about YTTV and the "same household" that streaming services highlight. I was hesitant when travelling for a bit but finally logged into YTTV when i was away and never had any issues between the 2 locations (about 1hr away from each other and in 2 different states). YTTV you will probably have to get the 4k plan, which allows for more than 2 concurrent/simultaneous connections which is what i did so all in my home can stream at same time if needed.

Sorry for your loss.

YTTV is what I would recommend if you live close (i.e. watch the same news stations).

I share an account with my dad. That's the only issue with it is that if you are in seperate parts of the country you won't be able to access two local area news stations channels.

You'll just have to be on the same Google family group (family link)

YouTube TV allows streaming on 3 devices simultaneously.
We shared an account with my wife's Mom without any issues that can't be managed with basic communication.
Basically she used it on one TV at her home and we used it on one TV and a computer at our home. She lived in the same county about 20 miles away.

directv stream is easiest. YoutubeTV a close 2nd.

EDIT: The directv stream device will work exactly the same as a directv receiver if she was used to directv. You can type in channel numbers and everything.

So sorry for your loss, losing a parent is a kick in the gut.

Since mom is on a fixed income, nix those subscription services and make sure she has a smart TV. So many possibilities out there. PlutoTV is amazing, so is YouTube.. If you must have something, I suggest FrndlyTV. $7 month, 50 channels including all Hallmark, Up, Pixel, Weather Channel, History, Westerns, etc. No better bargain out there IMHO.

I hope this helps and God Bless you and your mom. Take care

Get very basic cable - very basic for the local channels, etc. make sure the cable box like contour or whatever has built in apps.

Sign up for whatever apps BUT make sure to cancel the app after signing up for it.

Use the apps until the month is due and she can decide which apps she wants to keep paying for.
