Nope. I play in shorts, I’m too old to give a shite what anyone thinks about how I look, and if I wanna talk to my wife or kids while I’m playing and you don’t like it, lump it.

Correct. Money or wealth is no longer a good filter. You need cultural related rules that keep the riff raff out.

If not you'll have a bunch of spike haired dudes smoking meth on the course.

Oh hell no.

But since I'm not a golfer, I probably wouldn't fit in at Howell Park, either.

$250K struck me as low for that place.

The course isn’t a good fit for a pro tournament with galleries. And when it was soft/cloudy they were going very low… 62s at a US Open.

But it looks like an awesome place to play if you’re so lucky.

Pretty much sums up the basic rules at most course with an initiation over 50K

I’d be fine with all those rules except for the no shorts rule.

A lot of these rules are very common at clubs. It is considered rude to other members to be yapping on your phone or taking pics and posting them, or changing your stinky shoes in the parking lot. They absolutely do not want the paparazzi or hangers-on that follow celebrities everywhere. A private club is an institution. Most clubs were founded before the members were born and will last long after. The idea is that you join because you want to be there, and you want to take part in the culture, not change it to your liking.

A lot of people think this is snobby but any club is that way. You could join Hells' Angels or a book club and the basic concept applies. You join the club because you recognize the culture might be a good fit for you.

Someone who joins Hells Angels thinking they are going to get them all to wear business suits and saddle shoes or ride Yamaha bikes is probably sadly mistaken and miguided.

Someone who joins a book club and thinks they're going to get the other members to quit drinking wine and deeply read and understand the book is also sadly mistaken and misguided.

The $250k initiation fee is a great way of saying "You really have to want this and buy into our culture before you join". That's a stiff fee, but not unheard of at top clubs in the biggest cities in the US. Chicago Golf, Congressional, Augusta, etc... all charge a huge initiation fee. Of course that all assumes you have a handful of members endorsing you, pass the interview process, and wait a few years.

Again, sounds very snobby but it's no different than most clubs. At one time you had to kill a guy to get into the Mafia or take a bath in Sh** to get into Hells Angels. All clubs have initiation, some are more costly than others.

I have absolutely never heard of any club having a ‘No Celebrities’ rule.. how do you even enforce, or determine that ?? Like, what constitutes a celebrity ? So if they’d had this rule in the 1980s, i guess someone like Donald Trump wouldnt be accepted for membership ? In Los Angeles , there are tons of celebrities and i dont even know how they would draw a line between someone who is merely ‘well known’ vs someone who is an actual ‘celebrity’.. Also, it seems like the opposite of capitalism to actually penalize someone for being a celebrity- since most celebrities tend to be successful people .. Such lame policies and rules IMO .
