Read the article I linked. The guy who took his job got injured.

The article listed 3 players.

First was Braylen Wimmer. He's a senior and started in 56 of 61 games this year at SS. He didn't miss much time at all to injury. He also isn't likely to return, although he has 1 year of eligibility left due to COVID. Wimmer starting at short simply slid Braswell to 2nd and 3rd Base.

The next guy mentioned was Talmage Lecroy. He started 55 games this year, so he didn't miss much time to injury either. He's started at 3rd base down the stretch this year.

The final guy mentioned in the article was Will McGillis. he's a 5th year senior. He's been healthy since early May. Prior to his injury in late March, he was starting at 2B while Braswell started at 3B. Upon his return, he was at DH.

SO what it looks like is Braswell could play any infield position, so, like Jay, USC used that to their advantage and moved him around in the infield to several different positions to ensure other bats could remain in the lineup.

Seems like USC wanted him on the field somewhere even after all those guys were healthy. Once all three were healthy, Wimmer started at SS, Lecroy at 3rd, McGillis at DH, and Braswell at 2B. He didn't lose a starting job altogether, but rather his starting job at SS specifically.

Reagrdless, we need middle infielders. We'll lose both our starting middle infielders. Nippolt hit worse than Braswell did, and Guidry, to date, has very little game action outside of pitcher. Having depth in the middle infield is a primary focus for us this offseason. Signing a kid with 100+ starts at a school like USC and who was a big time recruit 2 years ago is a good take. In all likelihood, he would have been the starting second baseman or SS for USC next year with two of the guys listed not coming back next year.

Interesting..he pitched his freshman year too. He had 3 saves with 9 Ks in 5 IP.

So now we'll have two SS/P hybrids on the team

I will take a guy that batted .250 against SEC pitching versus a dude that was a .450 hitter in 2A ball somewhere. It is just simple for me, as long as the portal is open you use it, the kids are just easier to plug and play. And as some said, unlock a little potential and you never know.

It’s not knowing how to read baseball stats for me.

just see 250 and thinks he sucks.

An OBP 120 pts higher than BA would suggest he drew a ton of walks.

That batting average checks out for an LSU shortstop.

What did Nippolt show you that says he's capable of hitting .250 in the SEC?

Nobody said Nippolt could hit. Saying he will probably play a utility role like Nippolt and come in when Guidry jumps on the mound.

.255 BA isn’t going to cut it at LSU.
Our starting SS, who’s been a 3 year starter here, isn’t hitting much better than .255

Our shortstop has 11 home runs and 49 RBIs.

This guy needs the wind blowing out to reach the warning track.

This years team doesn’t have an every day player with an obp lower than .401 and slugging lower than .423.. pass

The problem with that is that he won’t be playing on this year’s team. If they can find two MIF with those kinds of numbers in the portal for next season, then absolutely they should go get them. For now, he’s the best MIF on paper on the roster heading into next season.

Are you going to let Jay know now or wait until after the CWS?

Are we to assume Gavin Guidry won't transition to SS and stay at pitcher?
We don’t rebuild at LSU, we reload. We are to assume the best shortstop will play. If that’s Gavin then he will play. The other middle infielders will have to find a place at 2nd base or another position.

Not sure about that. May be more of an approach thing for him than an actual power thing. Braswell is a ground ball hitter. We're after a power bat at SS anyway. Braswell gives you some comfort heading into next year, short on experience in the middle infield, even if nothing else in the portal sticks and your incoming freshman infielders aren't ready. I wouldn't write Guidry off either. We're going heavy in pitching in the portal, so Guidry may be able to play a dual role or even focus on being a position player.

Especially when they say neither of the top two WBB players in the portal would be coming here.

Tons of downvotes, but I thought this was very funny.
