That's what I'm worried about

I figured it's realistic to be able to drive from Louisiana to St. Louis in 1 day, but I would really prefer not to.

So Baton Rouge to St Louis is pretty much the same length and time as BR to Orlando. If that puts it into perspective for you. Absolutely do-able, but it is a haul and you don't want to drive much more the next day. If I was traveling the next day, I definitely would stop earlier. I made the trip once, stopping in Memphis on the way there and made the whole trip on the way back.

Only 9 1/2 hours or so. Not a bad day for my wife and me. Did it often when daughter was in college there.

That said, towns not named St Louis might be safer, although there are some nice areas and good hotels in St Louis.
