You guys should be in GIC. As hearing Coach Dietzel is a real treat, he is sharp, and has a great memory, tells poignant tales of his LSU teams and players. Gets a standing O everytime!

Why is Dietzel considered at traitor?

I thought he meant Dietzel needed a translator to understand Deke and Bobby.

Short version, left LSU for Army - it didn't work out, went to South Carolina, it didn't work out, and years later the powers that be brought him back as AD to give the news to Coach Mac that he was done after the 1979 season (because nobody else had the stones to "make Mac Pack"). Almost a triple treason, depending on how you count South Carolina.

(I mean, he didn't even have the decency to leave for the pros....)

That's what I thought. I went to school with a Dantin from Cutoff as well. We actually needed a "English to Lafourche" translator, until his accent calmed down a little and we got used to it.

Because he voluntarily left LSU.

But we immortalize a coach we fired.

Then we wonder why people say we're not too bright.

At Nichollls, many of the out of state professors couldn't even pronounce the last names of the majority of students at the beginning of the semesters.

Okay, besides Michigan, Tennessee and LSU, who fires a great coach to make room for questionable, untried or flat out disastrous ones?

Coach Mac should have been allowed to leave on his own terms. He was a great, inspiring coach, and produced a consistently great team. His time just paralleled Bryant's and there's nothing he could have done about that (except beat him, which he rarely did.) Since Mac, Arnsparger has the best record against Bama of 2-0-1, but he never coached against Bryant. Stovall, Archer, Hallman and Dinardo all had losing records against the Tide. The current coaches at LSU and Bama have winning records against Bama while at LSU.

In fairness to LSU, though, I think there was some truth to the game passing Mac by. Remember that Mac took over in the days of platoon football, pre-integration and his tenure ended in an era closer to the ball still played today than when he started. With that said, many other coaches made the adjustment by hiring innovative assistants and perhaps Mac could have done the same. Also, Mac almost saved his job in '79 when the Tigers went 7-5 (after consecutive 8-4 seasons). Look at the losses - only one of them is "bad":

Southern Cal L 12-17 (finished #2 in nation)
Georgia L 14-21 (road)
Florida State L 19-24 (finished #6)
Alabama L 0-3 (finished #1)
Tulane L 13-24 ("road").

Although it's a bit like being the world's tallest midget, that had to be one of the better 5-loss teams of all time!

BS, the program doesn't belong to the coach the best interests of the University are paramount.

That said Mac and Dietzel were/are both outstanding guys.

While I agree with your overall point, I should have said, in my opinion, Coach Mac earned the right, through his service and performance, to leave on his own terms. I mean come on, you seriously think a guy who coaches for you for 26 years, deserves nothing more than, "Mac we're going for a younger guy - pack your $hit!"? I had to hear that when I was 12, when he was the only coach I could remember. Not one since could carry his clipboard as either a coach or a human being.

But that's okay, "Help Mac Pack", then wait 20 years to be relevant again....

(Sorry for the Rant, but if this isn't the place for it, where is that place?)

After winning NC, he thought he deserved better than LSU.

Dietzel said this? Kinda reminds me of...

"I will not be the coach of the University of Alabama"

Most of them lie especially when there's no personal attachment to the organization.

Difference is, one of those statements clearly implied a personal attachment to an organization.

Yeah, Dietzel said that.
