I haven’t been to Rome in maybe 14 years, but will be there briefly in a few months. From what my wife has read, Rome is a place to skip the fancy places and eat at smaller spots.

I’m sorry I don’t have exact recommendations; I’m sure others will. But take that for what it’s worth.

Agreed. The less English there is on the menu, generally the better your chances are. Turn off the tourist path, go a couple of blocks, read the menus. Ask whomever is near the front what they like the best on the menu. You'll know.

I hesitated to chime in here because, unlike in Paris and some other places in Europe, the restaurants we go to in Rome tend to be on the casual side and not the high end gourmet places. That said, I recommended one of our favorite hangouts to someone on here yesterday- Enoteca Cul de Sac near Piazza Navona. Very good food and a great wine list.

Another favorite is Hosteria Costanza near Campo de Fiori. The food is delicious and the restaurant is in an old historic building built among the ruins of the old Theatre of Pompey which is where the Roman Senate was meeting when Julius Caesar was assassinated there.
