I work in metal music and marijuana.
It's encouraged at my facilities to go outside, sit in your car and smoke a bowl or two. Sometimes with co workers and other subordinates throughout the day (5 hour workdays for me)
..I won. I'm content with it all.

Of course it helps that I am near retirement. There are no more ladders for me to climb at my current company, and I'm not looking to move at this stage. I have a great boss who lets me do my work and is very easy to work with.
I'm just doing my job, no more, no less. My company doesn't care, and neither do I.

Like my career. Don’t really care about advancing, another step up is more work and drama for not much of a pay difference. But I take opportunities to learn new things and get new certifications in case we ever have to move or I ever want to do something else

I was 31 when I went back to PA school and it has proved to be a great decision. I work with a great doc who treats me with lots of respect and we work great together. He’s about 18 years older than me though so I’m dreading when he retires. I’m trying to pay off everything we owe so when he does retire and I can not be pressured to find something right away with someone who isn’t compatible. I really love what I do most days.

My dad did the same thing. Retired right at 52 after starting two companies and selling them off.

I give a shite about my career but not really advancing it any further.
I am a teacher wrapping up my 21st year in education. For the first 20 years I was primarily a football coach, but I got tired of the summer workouts and long hours during the season. In my last years I can’t tell you how many times I would be in a weight room thinking, “Man, if I weren’t doing this shite I could be anywhere in the world right now.” Or getting on a bus for a road game on Friday (especially one with little to no chance of winning) and thinking, “Man, if I weren’t doing this shite I could be on my way to a big college game or something and just watch and not really even give a frick who wins.”
Eventually I just got tired of trading so much of my time in my one and only life doing something I was no longer passionate about. So I quit. Would I make more money coaching? Yes. Would I have more “status”? Yes. But my arse is also about to spend two months this summer and about a dozen weekends this fall doing whatever the hell I want instead of worrying about some teenager’s squat depth or figuring out what percentage of the time someone’s offense runs the ball out of doubles.
Do whatever makes you happy, bros. Think about being on your deathbed one day and what you will want to have experienced - and go do it. One day in the future you will wish like hell you could go back to this time in your life.

TLDR Summary at the end…but:
I am an infrequent poster, but this one struck a nerve.
I spent 12+ years at a company, with the last 5 feeling the same as you do.
The company I used to work for had me by the “balls” because I was earning a defined benefit pension.
They knew they had me, and made my life miserable by design because they felt I would not leave because of the financial incentive to stay. As a result, bonuses and raises tapered off, despite the fact that I provided significant value to the company.
However, while this was happening, I attributed their “frickery” to “maybe I just lost my motivation” and that I “should work even harder”.
I left for new a new Company that values my contribution, and WOW, I didn’t realize how bad things were with Company #1.
I mention all of this because if u r in a bad situation, there is a chance it has zero to do with you.
TLDR Version: Waited to quit one company because they had me by the “balls” only to find out the grass was way way greener out there. Trust your instincts and yourself and no one else.

Started my own business 16 years ago because I wanted the upside of Income and Autonomy. I value making my own decisions. I am 100% accountable for my what I do and what value I create for my clients It is a demanding job and I had to create a system/process to focus on that I can continuously learn and produce. I don't have time for whining, blaming or feeling sorry for myself. There have been ups and downs but I am continually learning. Life is good.
