Usually both the upswing and the downswing was due to technological advancements.

The one that prompted me to think about this was GPS devices for cars/trucks. That blossomed into a nice little industry, then things like Waze came along and seem to have pretty much buried it.

Another was the video rental store. I followed along from the first mom and pop type stores, to increasing sized regional and then national chains, then streaming came along and video stores crashed.

iPods. Or any mp3 player. Smart phones rendered them obsolete.

Beanie babies. Never understood it; I had a coworker buying those things thinking they were the investible future.

In the end he had a shite ton of stupid dolls.

Zip drives

They were a nice leap from floppy disks, but then CDs happened.

I'm currently waiting on NFTs to crash,
I just don't know what the catalyst will be.

Tivo

The original DVR device. It was amazing at the time. Record live tv and watch whenever. Even could auto skip commercials.

Then cable’s companies created their own inferior devices. And Tivo died. At one time it was its own verb. “I Tivoed Survivor last night and will watch it later.”
