What to do around Montrose/Gunnison, CO

My parents are renting a cabin near Cimarron, CO which splits between Montrose and Gunnison. Want to take the kids out there, but want to know what we can expect? The rental is from October-January 1, so anytime during that period.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison. It’s a National Park. I’m not sure if it closes during the winter.

It is going to be FRIDGED during that time period
September is prime river trout fishing, so early October should be pretty good
October - November will have lots of folks around elk and deer hunting

Whats the summers like, if we ever make another trip?

Drive up to Crested Butte and eat at The Wooden Nickle. Walk around the town and see the sights. Cool place.

Can't say for certain about that area, I just know the Gunnison area from elk season.
Gunnison sits at 7,700' is in a bowl. The dense cold air just dumps out of the mountains and floods the town. It's a gorgeous place
Check out Trader's Rendezvous in Gunnison too. Very cool place LINK /

70's in the daytime, 40's at night. It's a perfect summer break from the Louisiana heat.

Umm you ski? Why would you go there in the winter then ask what to do?

Pretty nice, instead of skiing you can white water raft, hike, bike trails. The drive is beautiful.
Also smoked a lot of weed, but dont do that if you have kids.

For such a long duration, go at least twice: EARLY Oct, and again around Christmas.
Black Canyon, Grand Mesa, Million Dollar Highway, Mesa Verde, Hwy 149 from US50 to Lake City, Creede and South Fork is a great drive too - more fun on a motorcycle though. From South Fork head west on US 160 to Pagosa then over Wolf Creek Pass to Durango then North on US 550 make a nice loop.
Early Oct can be iffy with snow in the high country but if you get there early enough and the snow holds off you should drive Engineer Pass and/or Cinnamon Pass from Lake City to Ouray and Silverton respectively - won't need 4WD if it's clear but will want high clearance vehicle.

Ouray and Telluride are great day trips from Montrose…we did both last fall. Summer is a great time for jeep tours, breweries and rafting.

October can still be great for outdoor stuff.
December you can ski.
November will happen in between.
And bundle up, it gets Cold in Gunnison.

Drove alot of that last summer. Words and pictures just do not do it justice. Especially the drive from Durango to Silverton, then from Silverton to Ouray.

What are your parents planning to do there for those months?

That drive from Ouray to Silverton is sketchy for an actual highway. I drove it two winters ago in the snow late at night and this year just late at night. At night you wonder what there is to be afraid of in that black abyss. During the day you can see it, specially the roadway without any foundation underneath.
OP, Gunnison area is awesome. CB, Salida, Buena Vista, etc. lots to do.
