We moved up to Indiana from Idaho in November. I'm already done with this shite. Too scary for me with no real reward other than (surprise surprise) a LCOL.

Hurricanes give you warning and you can evacuate.

Heavy rain/lightning is kinda badass when you're indoors and it doesn't flood.

Snowstorms are fine if you're prepared.

A volcanic eruption (West risk) is scary, but at least you have awesome views.

Earthquakes also scare the shite out of me and I'd never live on the west coast for that reason.

You can't completely avoid natural disasters, but you can get the hell out of tornado alley. I had seen tornados rip through Louisiana before, but for some reason Friday night's tornado scared the shite out of me. Came about 6 miles south and leveled a couple houses.

Not for me, Jack.

I am with you. Moved from NJ to just west of Indianapolis. Not to mention my new house, while I love the newer construction features, doesn't have a basement. My old house was like a tank. Full basement, 2" river rock outer shell around a brick wall, cement shingle roof dating back to 1930. New house: small room under the center staircase is best bet.
