One other thing that doesn't get pointed out as much as it probably should is that the shift disproportionately hurt left-handed hitters. Because of the way the diamond is set up and where first base is, you can't as aggressively pull-side shift right-handers because you still need someone to cover first-base. It was a quirk of how baseball is played that no one really anticipated when shifts became more popular.
