What did John Cena mean by doing it then? Obviously everyone can see him.

At this point the history of the gesture starting with John Cena, and being used extensively by Demetrius Byrd / the 2007 Tigers and numerous others, has been discussed enough over the last day. (edit to add on the historical use: someone on pg 1 says Cena says he took the gesture from a rapper named Tony Yayo.)

Like you, I haven't seen an explanation of the original meaning. I will guess-- please note this is pure speculation-- that the diss is that you're saying you're operating on a higher level than your opponent can even perceive.

In this context-- if I'm right-- it's a fairly common insult somewhat analogous to:
- That went over your head. You're in over your head. (an inference they can't see what's happening)
- You're out of your depth.
- I'm out of your league / He's out of your league (a corollary to calling someone out of their depth... again with an implication that they don't have the skill to see the game being played).

The insult is just distilled into a quick gesture in the can't see me gesture which a player can do, and the opponent & audience can see from a distance without having to say anything (which might get drowned out in an arena).

That's my $0.02, and it might be wrong, but fits the way it's used.

You're right epbart. The 2nd part, being "I'm on a higher level than everyone else" is sometimes missed

Before this Cena guy you mention was waving his hand in front of his face, rappers like Tupac & Dr Dre were saying you can’t see me in the 1990s.

He got it from that.

Damn you’re dumb.

I think so, too. After I posted, was thinking I should've added "I'm on a higher plane" to emphasize that point that you're calling your opponent beneath you to the point that they can't see what you're doing. Again, guessing on my part, but it just makes sense.

How is it a taunt or insult and why would anyone even say it. Just seems pretty random thing to say or sign.

Just started watching sports I see. Its kind of old/random for this to come up again. the 2011 football team did it all the time after touchdowns/big plays.

Yeah, i think it was originally meant & Dbyrd did it, as a boast about your own play. But now, doing it towards an opposing player is more of a taunt in their face.

You all are wrong, google a sitcom named “Soap”. One of the characters had anxiety issues and his safe place was when he became invisible. He used this gesture to become invisible. Late 1970’s I think.
You are welcome

So you can’t see me means you ain’t on my level?

Is that supposed to hurt? Meeyow.

What’s wrong with frick you? Suck my dick? From what I’m reading we can have dicks in women’s sports now, so the timing might be right for such a reboot.

What about this? Seems more effective and to the point than the bland, khaki wearing “you can’t see me” gesture.

A good taunt should not sound like an invitation to play hide and go seek. If somebody on the street did that to me, I wouldn’t even blink - because I know I can see them. Am I overthinking this shite? I just want better insults. Is that so wrong?

Don't agree. OP asked what it meant, not when it was 1st done. I don't think D Byrd needed to go to his 'safe place'
