Spatial disorientation

Should have had an ELT. There are a few FAA approved instances where you don't have to have an elt installed but considering he's probably operating under public use category he should have one.

Agree and if he had a 406MHz onboard the world should have known he was down and phones should have been ringing off the hook.

A government owned aircraft doesn’t even actually need an airworthiness certificate. Not sure if this is case for BRPD though. Pretty wild. Either they didn’t have an ELT or it didn’t work.

Agreed and I have worked on R44s before and on the 100 hour/annual inspection checklist you are supposed to verify the battery expiration date and operation of the elt, including g switch activation. now with a 406 you have to register it with NOAA if they did not register it still should have been going off and showing a aircraft down to a satellite

I think they are used to the aircraft just landing at random places and times. For them to not be seen in constant flight is normal.
So they just fly around with no stated purpose all the time? In 2023, that's incredibly weird.

Choppers should have airbags

Nightime in rotary. Not much moon.

It had an airworthiness certificate when it left Robinson helicopter but when you get into public use aircraft that gets a little weird with the regulations. And I have seen elts fail either through g-switch not working or just problems inside the unit itself that's why we check them on a regular basis on our aircraft every 100 hours and you are also a limited at what time of day you can set it off so as to not alert the Coast Guard because they will call you if your elt is going off. But it also has to be registered so they know who owns it and that's up to the owner / operator of the aircraft

spatial disorientation happens when the brain doesn’t see a horizon or any point of reference so that it knows “which way is up”.
if your brain doesn’t have the point of reference, it won’t realize if your turning left, right, or even going up or down.
i remember in college when i was getting my pilots license of flying instruments. i SWORE i was making a hard left turn, even though my seatbelt was pulling on me due to this step turn. looked at my instruments and e was flying straight and level.
it can be very difficult to believe your instruments when your brain is screaming something completely different.

And when you mix that with some of the Forestry Dept and State run Forestry (CA) it goes into a whole another level of regs.

Bad way to fly.

Coast Guard or Air Force? I always heard of contacts coming from Scott AFB for ELT satellite hits.

It may depend on what part of the country you are in but ours have always come from the Coast Guard

What if they simply ran out of fuel? If they were trying to autorotate maybe they didn’t send a distress call.
