SB already pays well and provides pretty good benefits.
These people are fcking nuts. They need to quit thinking of themselves as essential and be thankful for what they get

Starbucks barista isn’t supposed to be a lifelong career.

I can count on one hand how many times I've been to Starbucks. But on a recent flight to NYC when I got off the plane in JFK I felt I needed a pick me up, so I went to a Starbucks on the way to baggage claim. First thing I found odd was when I went to pay with cash, the order taker looked at me with a bewildered look on her face like she didn't know what to do with a cash payment. I guess all their customers pay with a card. When she gave me my change, I gave her back two one dollar bills as a tip. She sneered at me like only a native New Yorker can, I guess the $2 tip for one cup of overpriced coffee was not enough.

frick Starbucks,

So north of a $40K/year salary is reasonable for a barista who makes coffee?

If they weren't getting tips, it would be somewhat reasonable.

Costa Coffee has kiosks in airports across the country that have machine baristas. You build your coffee selection, moca-choca-bullshite with 7 pumps of happiness or whatever the frick, and you watch the machine make your drink to perfection.

And then it doesn’t ask for a tip.

Coming to a Starbucks near you.

I thought so too. But it’s a volume business, and this will slow sales. Reportedly, their net profit margin is 10%.

If sales slow, volume drops, and more customers just keep going when the drive through line is long, that could get eaten up quickly.

Crazy that unskilled labor should start at $20/hour but maybe I'm just out of touch.

that's basically poverty and starbucks tend to be in higher COL areas. lots of fast food places are paying north of $15/hour so i can see why they'd try to get $20. also, it's a proposal. of course they're going to aim high.
