I think we are going to start planning a trip to Hawaii in 2024. Pearl Harbor is a bucket list and a must do for me. Besides Oahu (spelling?) what second island would you guys recommend? Any advice is welcomed. Thanks.

Kauai is a must-see. If there’s a more beautiful place on earth, I haven’t found it yet. I recommend that you make this your last stop. I also HIGHLY recommend that you do the 1/2 day zodiac boat tour of the Na Pali Coast with Captain Andy’s.

Rent a car and just visit the island, Waikiki is so much different than the North Shore

The Road to Hana in Maui was gorgeous, along with the the black sand beaches. The waves there were incredible. Waterfalls, the volcano. It was a great trip. Have fun and enjoy!

Really depends on what you want to do. The Big Island is all about the volcanoes, Maui is probably the most luxurious island overall, Kauai maybe the wildest with the best hiking.

I loved big island for the contrast between the two sides of the island. Kona side is all volcanic rock and looks like another planet while Hilo side is very lush and looks like the rest of hawaii

We haven’t been to the Big Island, but if Oahu & Pearl are must-sees (as they should be) I’d recommend Maui as the second island. Kauai is spectacular, but Maui is more well-rounded and gives a better “sampler” of HI for a first-timer. I’d suggest a day or two in Honolulu/Pearl, a day on Oahu’s North Shore, then head to Maui. Kaanapali Beach, Lahaina, Hana, & Big Beach will be a full schedule unless you’re going for 2 weeks. But once you go, you’ll go back, so you can see Kauai and Big Island next time.

Why did everyone downvote Maui and the Road to Hana? It looks like one of the top things to do there

Went to Kauai recently and it was incredible, great beaches for swimming and scuba then also have the Waimea Canyon which is an extinct volcanic rainforest. Kauai is a small island but packs a punch

I like Maui, but I would never do Road to Hana again. It’s basically an entire day that I and my family grew a bit tired of after a couple of hours. On my opinion, it’s just not the best use of time unless you have an abundance of time. I admit I am a little bitter because our longer-than-planned day on the Road to Hana knocked me out of getting to go the following morning to see the sun rise on Mt Haleakala. My kids, who were fairly young at the time, were just too tired to get up at 3 AM for that adventure.

This driving guide app was awesome on the big island. Just bluetooth it to the car and follow along. It was a great way to see just about everything and had a pretty good recs for where to eat. We stopped and did just about all we wanted over 4 days.

100% agree

O'ahu and Maui would definitely be my suggestion for a first trip

But in addition to Oahu, you can’t go wrong.

If staying in Honolulu/Waikiki, climb Diamond Head. I'm not a hiker and I loved it. Also, rent a car for a day and drive around the eastern side of the island past Diamond Head and all the way to Haleiwa, then back down through the Dole Plantation to the H2 and back into town. Amazing scenery.
