Students at a Catholic liberal arts university in northern Virginia say their concerns were brushed aside by officials who eliminated numerous majors at the school, ranging from religious studies to math.

The cuts by Marymount University, outside of Washington, D.C., have led to protests from outraged students who say the decision has rocked the school’s foundation as a Catholic institution that focuses on humanities.

Marymount’s board of trustees drove the final nail in the coffin for nine majors and one graduate program on Feb. 24, when it unanimously voted 20-0 in support of the plan to end the degrees. The school told Fox News Digital in a statement that "this decision reflects not only our students’ needs, but our responsibility to prepare them for the fulfilling, in-demand careers of the future."

But Reed said that students and staff were only alerted last month to the plan that will cut bachelor’s degrees in theology and religious studies, philosophy, mathematics, art, history, sociology, English, economics and secondary education, as well as a master’s program in English and humanities. Students are still required to study the subjects as part of the school's core program but are no longer able to select such areas of study as majors.

The school, however, has argued that eliminating the majors won't affect Marymount's mission as Catholic liberal arts school.

"Marymount will always be dedicated to the education of the whole person," the school said in a statement prior to the vote to end the majors.

Marymount was founded in 1950 originally as a two-year women’s Catholic school before it expanded to its current university status with roughly 4,000 enrolled students through its campus located in Arlington, Virginia.

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Arlington told Fox News Digital that the bishop "was informed of the university’s decision just prior to the public announcement" but that no one at the school asked for his input.

Smaller liberal arts schools are struggling. Axing majors is a way to cut costs

You will be seeing this more are more or actual closings.

We really have too many universities and need to consolidate.

I don't know whether to upvote or downvote. All I've got to say is, "What the hell are they going to offer insofar as a degree in anything that will prepare students for 'fulfilling, in demand careers'?"

Mathematics is being removed from a major course of study at a university?

Oh well. Not my monkeys, not my circus. It sound to me, though, like they don't have the operating funds to provide a worthwhile education, or they refuse to acknowledge the importance of those degrees.

I suppose they'll offer a degree in Driver Education instead, huh?

Math surprises me. Problem solving in a system then explaining your solution is an "in demand" skill.

That school shouldn’t exist. It may as well be for profit because it’s damn near impossible to get rejected and it’s kinda pricey for a shitty education. It’s a school for people who can’t get into any of the other schools in the area but think they are above community college.

Little misleading as an article. I’d assume they axed those subjects while still allowing for minors in those and numerous other subjects because of a lack of interest in them as a major. Makes perfect sense tbh. This is no different than what many other colleges including LSU and others have done in recent years. If the demand isn’t there, then there’s no need for them as majors. Those wanting to major in those subjects can find another college that includes those as majors.

Serious question, what other liberal arts are there?

Seems like the world would be a better place if all colleges axed useless majors like math, english, religious studies. Those should be limited to masters programs. Those students protesting don't understand the favor that their college has done for them.

Math? Psssh, that’s sooooo 1600’s. Something so old & rooted in racism has no place in our society if we want to progress. Numbers are a social construct anyway and should be assigned to things in life

How’d I do?

My guess is that the trustees are looking to kill the college so they can sell the land to developers.

That’s what happened with Sweetbriar and some other girl-only colleges in that neck of the woods the past decade or so.
