A Louisiana town hired a contractor construct a sidewalk along a residential street, but there isn’t enough space for the sidewalk and the mail boxes along the route. So they had to pull up all the mail boxes and mount them behind the new sidewalk.

Unfortunately the post office stopped delivering mail since they won’t drive their trucks on the sidewalk.

So the city moves the mail boxes again- this time to the narrow strip of grass between the street and the new sidewalk. But there isn’t enough space and the passing cars would hit the mailboxes (that now protrude into lane) with their side mirrors.

The mailboxes were then pulled out of the ground for a third time, rotated 90 degrees to be parallel to the street, and re-set.

quote:

The sidewalks are brand new. Brusly Mayor Scot Rhodes says the project was built with grant dollars to provide connectivity and how the mailboxes are now is not a permanent solution.

John Berthelot lives on East St. Francis Street and says it was him who initially brought up some concerns with the project. Berthelot says the mailboxes were first installed between the sidewalk and the houses. One day his mail wasn't delivered and he tracked down the mail carrier to find out why.

"She said your box isn't in the right place, I'm not going to walk across that sidewalk and I'm not going to drive across the sidewalk," Berthelot said.

That's when Berthelot says the postmaster got involved and says the contractor moved the mailboxes to where they are now. Berthelot says the mailboxes were in a better location before the sidewalk was installed. If they're placed on the inner side of the sidewalk he won't get mail. If they're placed on the outside of the sidewalk he says the boxes are too close to the road.

"I don't have any choice," he said.

Rivet says someone has some explaining to do.

"The construction guy told me to talk to the mayor, the mayor told me to talk to the post office," Rivet said.

Drivers seem to swerve out of the way to avoid the edge of the road, except when passing another car like Rivet was doing when she hit the mailbox.

Spend 10 minutes in a road design building for the DOTD or any local agency in this state and it starts to make sense.

Why would they install a sidewalk that close to a street?

One of many problems with government

Designers like to sit behind a computer and use Google Maps instead of visiting the damn job site to see glaring issues like this.

I deal with it daily.

And this is almost certainly an example of well-intentioned waste/counterproductive government.

Just imagine how bad it is when there is a profit motive (i.e. graft) built in to similar projects.

To be fair, that mailbox could be set back 10 feet from the road & a woman would manage to hit it

Because it is the "Good Idea Fairy" run amok.

Citizens: "We need a sidewalk because Americans walk places!" ( )

Local gubmint: "Fine, here's your sidewalk. We had to move the mailboxes."

Citizens: "Great. Okay, so only a small percentage of us actually 'walk' anywhere, but they can now. Thanks."

Fed gubmint: "frick your mailboxes, we're not driving on the sidewalk. Your quaint, 19th Century notion of 'mail service' is interrupted until you fix this."

Citizens: "OMG! We have to have our mail."

Local gubmint:

Private business has plenty of issues like this. Kodak had digital camera back in the 70s. Come releases New Come to backlash. Blockbuster refuses multiple offers to buy Netflix. Lays releases chips with Olestra to shitty outcome.

Just change the mail route to a walked route, it’s not that complicated.

My mail carrier walks my neighborhood, it’s not uncommon. With a sidewalk in place, it just got easier instead of walking through yards.

It’s amazing not a single person foresaw this mailbox issue. Unbelievable.

It looks like the utility poles prevented them from going any further back from the road. I'm sure this is some Infrastructure money from the Gov. that had to be spent that and they chose to use to connect neighborhoods the levee trail.

You aren’t supposed to place anything in that strip. Federal policy requires a 1.5 ft lateral offset to the edge of the travel lane. State policy says you can’t mount in the sidewalk, even though ada act will allow it as long as useable width of sidewalk is something like 3-3.5 ft. Since this isn’t a state route and project was accepted Brusly can place them in the sidewalk as long as they follow ada.

They going to have to be moved and the lazy post office worker walk the route.
