offered me a position that's almost half of what I can make elsewhere.

Did you do a COL comparison? I'm not saying that the salary still isn't "too low", but it may not be as bad as you think.

The New Orleans area is expensive for no reason. High insurance costs (both auto and homeowners), paying a premium for safety, private school, taxes, etc. COL here seems higher than Houston but the salaries are lower.

Exactly. You're comparing apples to oranges when you consider cost of living in San Fran/Cali area compared Louisiana.

When comparing salaries for software, you don’t have to go directly to San Francisco. That’s like saying you need to move to Manhattan to work in finance.

You can be in software in DFW, SLC, Raleigh, Atlanta, and Huntsville. Hell even making 120K in Austin is a better life than 65K in Baton Rouge. Those salaries are a joke and the companies know it.

This is a misnomer in LA now. State income tax, high sales tax rates, sky high car insurance and home insurance rates. And a real estate market that’s just fricking stupid in any place that you actually want to live with zero infrastructure to support the prices demanding.

I really want to move elsewhere
