I think he gets a bonus for breaking the world record. No need to break it by 6 inches when you can take it a centimeter at a time!

Crazy. He actually cleared it with a good bit to spare. He'll break the record again.
. It is in the thighs. Look how close they were and he hit it almost perfectly. Not saying he can’t go higher. The poles today are so much better than when Bubka set those records. I’m not saying Mondo isn’t as great. I’m saying Bubka was just as special.

But isn’t that the same for every sport? He apparently has the best combination of size, weight, fitness and technique in history. Why him? It’s a mystery.

Yea I suppose that’s true. This just seems like a sport that is very specifically technical, other sports would seem to have more variance, but again I know nothing about it so maybe I’m just ignorant

Not joking, is there a better athlete currently at his sport? This is Bolt at his prime.
honestly at this point I would rank Mondo ahead of bolt. It’s hard because they’re completely different events but he’s had a greater effect on pole vault than bolt had on sprinting, imo.

Duplantis would be a great decathlete. He can really long jump and sprint. I bet he can high jump.

He got that from his mama.

whatever. He is an all time LSU athlete and both his parents and his brother were all time LSU athletes. He is a lot more about LSU than you will ever be.

How is it that one guy can be so much better than everyone else? Seems like they’d all be essentially the same.

Because of genetics, his parents were world class athletes, and Mondo has been a pole vaulter since he was 3 yrs old. He had a PV pit in his backyard and trained daily. I think he will clear 21’ by the time his career is over. He could easily compete for another 10 years and is arguably the greatest T&F athlete in the world right now.

It would seem like this is essentially 100% based on technique and proper weightlifting and training.
while pole vaulting is definitely technique and training those things in themselves rely on speed, strength, and jumping ability all of which mondo has a ton of. He’s probably the perfect physical makeup for pole vault. Take with that his family’s background in the event and how he grew up training for it he was almost destined for what he’s doing.

He only does it slightly each time so he can do it many more times and cash in on bonuses he gains with each new records. I hope he doesn't hold anything back before he eclipses his prime for the sake of profit.

He got a 100K bonus from World's Championship last year for breaking the record. That doesn't include what he gets from his sponsors.

Both Bubka and Duplantis ran sub 10.6 100 meter times. It's speed down the runway, the speed which allows the vaulter to bend the pole, the core strength to drive the feet upwards and to withstand the pole whip over the bar...an amazing athlete...

Mondo was also a 23 foot long jumper and ran 10.6 in the 100 meter. He’s a very good athlete as well

Meh, he dropped in for a couple years, used the LSU brand and hopped out and back to his country when it was convenient.
