Mardis Gras Lafayette route is dumb

Putting a route crossing the future I 49 and stopping traffic is terrible. The worst part is it starts roughly a block or 2 on the east side of the major traffic route and proceeds west. Just move it a block or 2 west and let the world proceed with their business. Even a USL grad should see the logic in that. Maybe not. Put a toll road around that ghetto, I'd pay $5 to not ever pass that way again.

You will accept that parade route and you will like it!

Got a bit stuck in it on Friday. It does seem to meander unnecessarily across major roadways.

I would guess it is due to race that it has to start there

We were at the start and loved it. 35 minutes and we were out. Home in an hour or so.

How would that affect crawfish prices?

The culture of Lafayette appreciates it starting near Simcoe st on otherside of thruway. Goodluck trying to change that

From the renderings I have seen, 49 goes over much of the downtown section as a bridge, but that is pretty crappy that they close off a section of a major north south roadway for a parade.
Even in Houma when they were considering a route shift to start at the civic center instead of the mall, they realized that they would block the Tunnel and 311, they decided to keep it the way it was to avoid that issue. I also have some suspicions that all the people that rent out spaces along park objected too since their spots are now worthless since they are now at the end of the route. The big issue in my mind is that the parades are taking longer and longer each year to get to downtown. This year I think they broke records in a bad way at how long it took them to make the route. Terrebonne Parish needs to either to start the parades earlier or figure a way to get the king or queen at city hall to toast at 9 pm like they used to.

Been hearing this for over 30 years....I'll believe it when it happens. Oh, and the route is about race.

I hate that people passing on I-10/90 only see the ghetto coming thru. You have to get south of the airport/Vermillion river before it’s worth a shite.

The parade starting point is traditional going back at least mid-20th century, maybe even back to when the parade began. Known as Pontiac Point, it was a commercial hub at the time, pre-Oil Center when the city was centered more on the north side.

Houma route change was dumb all around. Starting Downtown at 6 PM would have been terrible for the bars, made traffic terrible, and getting to the mall where most of the families are sitting last, which a lot of times is past midnight would have been awful.

Do people catch the parade on the future I-49 crossing? Do people set up tents, bbq pits, chairs, ladders, etc or do the police stop traffic just so the floats and marching units can cross the road?
I’m pretty sure I can guess the answer but I want to make sure it’s as ridiculous as I’m visualizing it
