It’s between John Bonham, Kurt Cobain and Lane Staley. John is a drum god, but I can’t see Led Zeppelin maintaining their power through the 80’s hair rock era. AIC was amazing with Lane, but I don’t see them doing a whole lot differently than what they had already done. Would probably be similar to what they did after Lane passed. I think I’d be most interested to see which direction Nirvana would go, but of course, there would be no Foo Fighters.

Bonham was on a one way path to the grave long before what happened in 1980. Plant and Jones had cleaned up a few years before and even Jimmy Page had calmed down. The night he died, he had gone to one of the other band members house but had been totally incapacitated by the copious amounts of alcohol he had drank that day....which was not all that unusual for Bonham.

I think Cobain is an interesting choice but in reverse. I really think he had probably tapped out his reservoir by the time of his death.

Lane was a shell of his former self for years. 10 years added to his life sadly wouldn't have been productive.

My list would be:
Burton
Rhoads
Dimebag and
Hoon
