My parents picked TB (technically Many). Only one of them is happy about that, and it ain’t the one that doesn’t like to hunt and fish.
Myself, I’m looking at MS. I went there for college, and still have friends there and relatives with camps in the state. Seems nice and peaceful as long as one avoids Jackson.

I like Natchez. I know it’s MS, but it’s just across the river.

Port Hudson.
North of I-10/12. Out of the city but not far away. Easy to Bypass Baton Rouge when going east or west. Flood risk is minor. Under an hour away from good outdoor activities or medical care. Away from the projects.

The excitement never ends in New Orleans East, even the drive home is like a game of roulette.

St Francisville or New Roads.
Low costs of living, plenty of space, plenty of fishing, and fairly close to Baton Rouge for specialized healthcare and airport.

Saint Francisville

The Boyz there sure do love their snow bunnies. They’d welcome such a move

I would want to be far enough away from the coast to avoid the worst or the hurricanes. And I would want to be near recreational activists like golf or fishing. And it would need to be quiet and safe.
But also close to family. I would want to be able to see my kids and grand kids as often as possible.

Why?
What is the allure of Madisonville for a retiree?
Things I would want as a retiree would be proximity to airport(s), safety, other old people, golf and a various of leisure activities which is similar to alot of the reasons we moved to St Tammany in the first place but I am just not sure I would want to be on the west side of the parish.
I am sure alot of what bugs me about Slidell now as a parent would fade and I could picture myself living on the water in Slidell (Eden Isles or Oak Harbor) boating easily weekly when the weather allows, having access to Gulf Coast Casinos and airport, closer to Gulf Coast Beaches, a couple of (not so great) golf courses to chose from and work as a course marshal for free golf, plenty of close grocery shopping, dry cleaners, shopping centers, etc.
Although I enjoy the outdoors, woods, hiking and such I am not so sure I would want to too rural and further away from my family in case of an emergency.
