This exactly. I completely shut down for years- I thought it was just me getting older (17 at the time) but for the first time since I was 12, I not only started talking to people, but I actually wanted to talk to people.

I think they can be very helpful in people who don't get a marked improvement from talk therapy alone or are in life situations where environmental changes don't improve the situation (i.e. post-partum for example).

I do think they're overprescribed and can be a bandaid for what the root cause of their depression may be. I've seen my fair share of returning clients who initially quit therapy early on because "change" wasn't happening fast enough for their liking but then showed back up when the anti-depressant didn't solve all of their problems.

I think every step we can take to reduce our chemical dependencies on big pharma the better. I'm not saying that NO one truly benefits. I'm saying well... y'all all know what i'm saying.

What is the OT’s general take on antidepressants? Do you think they are effective, or cause more harm than good in the long run?

I think it's different for everyone. Some people they help, some they don't. For me personally, I've had mixed results. They helped me early on, but I feel like they're less helpful now.

I was on Effexor for years after my parents died. Got off it 5 years ago and replaced it with exercise, diet, spiritual life, and counseling. Worked much better than meds.

Pretty much taken them all and finally got right with max dose of Celexa. I would get depressed but it came from anxiety and ultimately led to a little paranoid schizophrenia. Unfortunately I feel like it's worse because I started taking meds while my brain was still developing but I've tried to ween and my mind just goes to awful places.

I fought my wife hard on not medicating our kids because of this. Besides, I had a reason to be depressed. Watching your dad slowly die over the course of 5 years is something kids should be upset about.

Easier to swallow than buckshot.

I'd be dead without them.

A good diet and exercise routine will do more for your mental health than any pill.

Much like the rest of big-Pharma, they’re waaaaaaaaay over-prescribed. In general, this nation has a massive issue with prescription drugs of all types.

In the 80's pre triptans and calcium channel blockers my doctor basically tried everything trying to find something that would help my clusters. Only thing that ever helped was Cafergot and I could only take it for 5 days before I'd get toxic. He tried me on Sinequan, Paxil, and Elavil. They weirded me out. I could really sleep after taking Sinequan was the only good thing about it. None of them helped my clusters and I didn't take them long.

I wish they worked for my wife. She's among the approx. 20% of patients for whom they're ineffective.

My 50mg of Zoloft and 20mg a beta blocked help from vomiting at the mouth and getting myself into trouble. Especially in todays world. I am far from depressed. But these medications in combination seem to help.

A few Budweiser’s or a few shots of Blanton work pretty well so I’m not opposed to attitude adjustments on occasion

Some people need them but they are overprescribed.
