He started being pulled back by defenders as the ball was extended. At that point, the play is dead where the ball is extended. Nothing after that matters

He intentionally pulled the ball back into his chest so it didn’t get knocked out. Unless I have no idea what the rule is it shouldn’t have been a first down.

Wrong. He didn’t sit there with the ball extended, he pulled it back short of the line to gain himself.

It’s just like bouncing off of a tackle, then running backwards and being tackled short. Not a first.
