She's perfectly competent when she pays attention to the road.

She very rarely does this.

Added up and averaged out, women drivers don't do as well in tight spots and when you have to react quickly while staying calm.

Not at all. She has the attention span of a goldfish unless a Hallmark or Hallmark like movie is on. Has no idea where her tires or bumpers are when making lane changes, turns, or parking. Has to be the DJ and control carplay, but refuses to use Siri, so constantly staring at the head unit while picking through either 90's rap, 2000's boy bands, or british sounding guys who are a genre I would call John Mayerish. She hits curbs, runs with a tire on the white or on the shoulder, drives through the yard, has hit my truck pulling into the garage, and has no idea she does it. Has literally asked why no grass grows in spots or why she constantly has flats/punctures/wheel rash.

All that said she may be a worse navigator. Has no clue what is left and what is right and will say turn left up here in metro freeway traffic, and after you make your way across five lanes asks if you're going to get over or not because the turn is in a quarter mile. That could be fixed if she would have navigation on carplay, but then it interrupts the music that her and my teenager are belting out, so navigation needs to be muted and she'll let you know when you need to do something. She also likes to grab the "Oh shite bar" and nervously let me know someone an 1/8th a mile in front of me is stopped... as I am slowing down for the same redlight.

She is a lot of things, and most of those are good , but she is neither a good driver or passenger.

My wife does this thing that drive me nuts, like waiting to the last minute to get over and turn where she needs to. If she needs to turn right, she'll stay in the left lane almost till she has to turn. She misses turns all the time.

I can also feel her accelerate before a red light and jam on the brakes at the end. I'm like, let your foot off the gas and coast to a stop.

I’d like to say she isn’t but I’m the one that taught her to drive. So I’ll just say she could be better. She gets her and the kids safely from the house to wherever she’s going. It is the general sense of direction and lack of attention to surroundings that gets her. That and not knowing how to use technology effectively to get out of a jam.

The question is - are you a good passenger when your wife/gf is driving?

She's either really good or incredibly lucky. When I'm riding shotgun, I wonder how she hasn't totaled every vehicle she has owned.

My wife drives like an old person.

She had to rush me to the ER once, and she still drove like a maw-maw going to the hospital…..Once I regained all my senses, I gave her the biggest fussing of my life.

No.

TO the point where when I ride with her, which is RARE, I am scared shitless and thinking the whole time "Next time I talk to her dad I'm going to rip him a new one for not doing a better job of teaching her".

She has terrible spatial perception, no instinct for predicting traffic behaviors, refuses to switch lanes to go around a slower driver, over reacts to the smallest blip of brake lights, and can't seem to navigate even with Google Maps.

She's awesome at a lot of other stuff. But driving is not one of them. I feel sorry for anyone who encounters her out on the road.

Surprisingly yes, even though she didn't drive when she was younger and I taught her as an adult (manual and automatic).
My (somewhat arbitrary) condition for a good driver is whether or not I'm silently going nuts with fear in the passenger seat. I'm mostly very comfortable when she's driving.

Several years ago we were driving separate cars on I95 through Providence RI. I was behind her and she threw a tie rod. She got the car over beautifully and safely. I was and am still impressed and proud. That move went a long way toward my trusting her driving.

In her early days of driving (and still learning) a manual transmission, we were spending the winter on Treasure Island, FL, which is a barrier island. Large drawbridges separate the Island from the mainland and traffic backs up on the (moderately steep) uphill when the drawbridge is up. The fear on her face was palpable getting ready to start uphill from a dead stop. (Dick move, but I was dying with laughter). I told her just mash the gas and come off the clutch, and stay calm. She did fine, but I enjoyed it.

Yes, she is a good driver, but I drive most of the time no matter what. She prefers to look. On the rare occasions when I'm not driving, no matter who is driving, it kind of makes me nervous, not because they are a poor driver, but just because I'm not in control. Didn't used to be that way.
