As someone with extensive knowledge on both, I will say it depends on what you are looking to do.

What would one need to be looking for to make Corpus preferable?

Galveston has to be more charming than Corpus Christi

This. Galveston has more charm and worthless beaches.

Corpus has somewhat better beaches and food, but is a crap town.

SPI is the best… unfortunately.

Cinnamon Shores is better than anything Galveston has to offer.

If you want to do anything except sit on the beach all day, then Galveston is probably the play. Like others have said CC is pretty sparse for entertainment.

Depending on the day, the chances of having nicer water is slightly higher in CC, but the half a dozen times I’ve been over the last several years, only maybe once did I really see a difference. Either way, if you just accept the conditions for what they are and don’t have lofty expectations, you can enjoy either pretty equally.

The Galvez in Galveston is really nice. Stayed there a few months ago and enjoyed our stay.

Go to Port Aransas. You can get a rental in Cinnamon Shores and it's actually pretty nice. The sand and water aren't great but the set up is nice.

The water can be nicer in CC, but that place and Pointe West in Galveston are nearly identical. Throw in the Strand/Seawall/Moody Gardens of Galveston and there is a lot more to do for kids.

CC has an aquarium and the USS Lexington. The movie Pearl Harbor was filmed using the ship.

check out Surfside if you're airbnb'ing. not many hotel rooms there. it's a small community but with several restaurants and HEB only a couple miles inland. the beach is very typical TX beach.

ETA bonuses:
- can turn south off I-10 west of Sealy, screw Houston traffic
- the first buc-ees is down there maybe a mile inland. it's tiny.

Personally, Galveston is like Baton Rouge by the sea - I prefer corpus but my dad was from that area so it may just be nostalgia

Anywhere but Galveston. The water looks horrible there.
