No doubt. I love the memories, but it was hot as hell in the summer.

I was the Southeatern Region winner in Diversified Crop Production, top 4 in the nation. I got beat at the National Convention by a kid from Ohio who deserved to win. When you are standing on the stage at the National Convention it really is a sea of blue and gold. I learned a tremendous amount of life lessons in that organization that has served me well.

FFA President 1986 or sum such. On the nominating committee for state officers.
Competed in meats judging and parliamentary procedure.
(i remember it now.... the code for round steak on the judging form...1-10-45.....good times.)
Was told by my adviser that the Area 3 Vice President nominee would be unable to serve her term because she swallowed a watermelon seed. Young g vice was deeply concerned about what a watermelon seed could do to a female, until I got the short answer that she had become pregnant.
Mr Vice President, why by the plow? because the plow represents labor and tillage of the soil. Without labor, neither knowledge nor wisdom can accomplish much.
Good times.

Began 4-H in elementary / middle school showing pigs and commercial heifers. FFA was always viewed as the trashy group.
Junior year in 98 showed a gilt with FFA. When it was time to shave pigs before the parish show everyone brought theirs to the ah teachers house. His nephew was there with a blunt and a 40 of OE. He’s hit that blunt and blow it in the pigs faces and give them some OE in the trough. Made those pigs a lot easier to shave.

Lone Star farmer '86. At a pasture judging contest in San Marcos my Sr year, following the event the coordinator covered the purpose for developing pasture judging skills so that we might better select properties like the one the event was held at, and then more or less rhetorically asked what we thought would be best done with that place, which I responded "Sell it!" The place was solid hill country rocks, shrubs, and cedar with mixed native grasses and bluestems. He replied "Funny you mention that, the owner told us this was the last year for us here as he was selling it."

I was on our school's FFA talent team. I played keyboards. The bass and lead guitar players were both black guys with huge afros. We played a short version of "Skin Tight" by the Ohio Players. All the other bands were country bands. We won second place at McKinney, Texas. I think there were a lot of FFA members who listened to R and B and rock.
Another friend and I went to the state meet in San Antonio (and can't remember why). At that time, downtown San Antonio was pretty rough. We put on our FFA jackets and violated the rules by roaming alone around downtown. We got lost and ended up in an alley behind some Mexican biker bar.
We asked a guy who was out in the alley for help getting back to the hotel. He says to hold on and goes into the bar. He comes out with 2-3 other rough looking bikers and I'm thinking "we're about to die." They were, however, very nice. Looking back, I'm sure they were thinking "who are these country arse kids hanging out here at night."

Ag Shop and FFA were a big positive influence in my life and the lives of my brothers and most of our high school friends.
I was Sentinel, Reporter and Chapter President; Area 1 VP, went to summer camp in Bunkie a couple years and to State Convention. Always liked the Ag Rallys where kids gathered and competed against members of other chapters for area and state awards. Went to National convention, saw some awesome speakers and Gerald Ford was there that year.
Our advisor was one of the greatest men, Christian father and most revered teachers in north Louisiana and had a positive, lifelong impact on hundreds of young mens lives.
Our Motto…
Learning to do,
Doing to learn,
Earning to live,
Living to serve.
And in departing, “As we mingle with others, let us be diligent in our labor, just in our dealings, courteous to everyone and above all, fair and honest in the game of life.”
I for one believe we would be a better nation if we returned to the values taught in the FFA.

The black kids in our FFA taped a satire of "black FFA parliamentary procedure." I wish I had a copy, as it was pretty damn funny. "Stationed by the fist" and "stationed by the afro comb" were part of it. "Laying the advisor's wife on the table" was another.

Nobody drives by hand anymore. GPS has ruined the art of driving a tractor.
Pawpaw used to say you can get more planted on a crooked row anyways.

85, 86, and 87. Small town high school in Arkansas. I did dairy products competition. We got to taste cheeses, milk (identifying defects) and identify defects with milking equipment. I remember going to Russellville Arkansas for regional competition and Fayetteville (at the U of A) for state competition. Never won but it was a good times.
I still have my FFA jacket in the closet but it doesn’t fit anymore.

Bench pressing 400 lbs on the regular will do that for you.
The OT, probably.
