One of the few places to find wild quail nowadays. They use it.

The net is roughly $50 per ton of cane on the farmers side. You are figuring tons of pure sugar

It’s kinda perfect for them.
Like a tall grassland
Disturbed every other year from harvest and then burned
Tons of bare ground
Weeds and bugs for them to eat
Lots of edge
Overhead cover to escape predators

Still a lot of uncut cane in Northern St. Landry Parish.

Some next door to my MIL.

With a name like Sucrose I’m sure you know all about sugar cane. I know absolutely nothing about it. What would sugar cane straight out of the field bring? Edit: never mind I see where you said $50/ton.

After reading a little more it seems a ton of raw sugar cane yields about 220lbs of sugar. So if they are indeed harvesting 60 tons that would be roughly $5670 per acre assuming the $859/ton August price.

That's like saying my yard is a perfect replacement for forestland for seed-eating birds because I put feeders up.

Sugarcane fields as a substitute for quail habitat is like giving a rock to someone and calling bread--if they don't have anything else to eat, they will be grateful for the gift.

Yeah, especially in winter.

I’m not calling BS as I’m clueless, but is that number right? 100,000 lbs of sugar per acre?

its not 100,000# of sugar/Acre. they are only producing about 220-240# sugar per ton of cane.

you need to figure in the cost of fertilizer (which sky rocketed the last 2 years), cost of pesticides, cost of fuel (sky rocketed), lbor cost, equipment note, land rent, and equipment repair and maintenance into all this.

We never hunted quail before New Years because of the standing cane.

Yes, this. Gross income nowhere near equal to net profit in farming/ranching.

No a freeze that may kill the Cain increases sugar content. Mills drive the grinding season now since so many have closed.

Uncle Sam provides these sugar baws a monopoly by limiting importation of foreign sugar and setting a price floor; so of course they do well.

Yup, can't blame anyone putting land into cane though with the guaranteed payment. I have some family with a good chunk of land around central LA which has historically been corn/soy or cotton. Now its all in cane.
