I had just gone inside and to my knowledge, she decided to try to keep the fire going, keep the fun going, and she put another log on it and there wasn’t much flame at all," he told FOX 13 Tampa. "But, she just, I guess felt to pour a little gas on it, and it would reignite, and it did. I guess it must’ve traveled the gas stream up to the gas can, and it exploded in her hands."

That's a tough way to learn this lesson.

Why is someone in Tampa needing to keep a fire going? It probably was a low of 65 degrees

I've fricked with gas and blowing stuff up in my youth and used to think exploding gas cans were a Hollywood myth. But because of a similar story I did some research and it actually can happen. As most of us know when you light the end of a gas can nozzle just sitting on the ground it will just shoot a bit of flame than can be eventually be extinguished by putting your hand or rag over the nozzle. But that's all because its not inverted and the quickly expanding gases can leave via the nozzle end.

The potential for explosion happens when you are actively pouring the can and a "glug" of air re-enters the can to replace the space voided by gasoline being poured. In that moment the "glug" is happening, flame enters the gas can. Because the the can is in an inverted pouring position the fire-ball inside has no way to quickly escape since the gasoline liquid is blocking the spout. Hence the explosion and terrible situation.

If the EPA hadn't outlawed vents this woman could have been stupid and lived.

That's awful. Maybe use lighter fluid instead.

my dumbass so. did this once.
except he threw the van backwards before the flame reached the can, so he didn’t get burned.

unfortunately, my house was behind him.
can hits back wall and ignites everything.

fortunately all it did was melt all of the siding and that thin foam insulation shite off it.

lucky for him, the cops and fire dept showed up less than a minute after i did so i wasn’t able to really wear his arse out.

Never pour gas out of the can straight into the fire.

Always pour it into a cup then toss on the fire
