In an original film that isn't a remake or a reboot.

Steven Spielberg looks to have found his Frank Bullitt as sources tell Deadline Bradley Cooper has closed a deal to play the no-nonsense San Francisco cop in the new original Bullitt story centered on the classic character famously played by Steven McQueen in the 1968 thriller, which is set up at Warner Bros. Cooper will also produce the pic along with Spielberg and his producing partner Kristie Macosko Krieger (marking their second collaboration after Maestro), with Josh Singer on board to pen the script. Steve McQueen’s son, Chad ,and granddaughter Molly McQueen will exec produce the new movie.
Sources are adamant this is not a remake of the original film but a new idea centered on the character. In the original film, Frank Bullitt is a no-nonsense San Francisco cop on the hunt for the mob kingpin that killed his witness. Considered one of McQueen’s more iconic roles, the film delivers one of the most famous car-chase scenes in cinema history. Sources also add the film is still in development.
While Cooper’s deal only recently closed, he and Spielberg have been talking about the character and what a new take on the story would look like going all the way back to the pandemic when everyone was stuck in quarantine and had nothing but time on their hands. Cooper and Spielberg have been trying for years to team up on something going all the way back to when the legendary director came close to directing Cooper in American Sniper (Spielberg ultimately moved on and Clint Eastwood stepped in to direct the film). Along the years they have continued to talk about the projects they are developing and it was actually Spielberg who offered Cooper the directing job on Maestro. Spielberg had been developing it for years and he came close to directing himself but after being blown away by Cooper’s A Star Is Born, Spielberg felt Cooper was better suited to not only star in the film but direct the love story as well (Spielberg remains on as a producer of the film along with Macosko Krieger, Martin Scorsese, Fred Berner and Amy Durning).
Cooper is currently in post-production on Maestro, which he also co-wrote, directed, produced and stars in, alongside, Carey Mulligan. The film will be released by Netflix in 2023. With 9 Oscar nominations for both acting and producing, Cooper is one of the few actor/directors who has been able to combine critical acclaim with box office success. Cooper is repped by Range Media Partners.

he's gonna drive one of these, isn't he?

He’ll be driving a Chevy volt cruising all over town looking for charging stations in the middle of a high speed chase

As long as they don't try to recreate the greatest car chase of all-time.

There better be an awesome car chase involving awesome cars. It's a real high bar to clear with this one.

I wish they'd set the film in the late 60's again.

Insurance is too high for real car chases now. It'll be fakey like FF.

He will drive a 1960s muscle car… the libs of San Fran will revolt and he will be forced to resign his position and begin working security for BLM.

the star will be a crossdressing fig wearing rainbow shirt while driving a chevy volt, in a chase scene, driving at maximum possible speed of 30mph, to catch a bunch of crooks, trying to escape in a prius. spoiler alert, the prius is way too fast for him to catch it
one thing is guaranteed, it will be worse than your worst nightmare of how bad this thing will be

It's not just the car chase, that entire movie is beautifully shot. It's super creative without being overbearing or trying to hard to shoehorn in artistic camera angles like the first season of the Wire or something.

I know I might be setting myself up for disappointment, but I'm optimistic it won't suck.

I guess it’s like how the source material for Diehard was technically a sequel for the book & movie “The Detective”?

Why? Just call the lead Jack Smith or something if its not a sequel. Calling the guy Bullitt will just remind everyone that Bradley Cooper is no Steve McQueen.

quote:No, not Cooper. It'll be a stunt driver. Now, had that been Tom Cruise? Sure.

I just can't see Cooper as a fit for this role.
